Khan Shatyr ( Russian Хан шатыр ; literally translated Royal Tent ) is a huge transparent tent in the Kazakh capital Nur-Sultan . The structure was opened on July 6, 2010. The construction costs amounted to around 260 million US dollars. After the pyramid of peace and harmony , this is the second project by British architect Norman Foster ( Foster + Partners ) in Astana.

The architectural project was officially presented on December 7, 2006 by Nursultan Nazarbayev , President of Kazakhstan. In December 2008 the most difficult construction phase of the tent was completed. The 150 meter high three-legged mast was erected within two weeks.

The opening ceremony took place on July 6, 2010, on the 70th birthday of the Kazakh President. Many heads of state from the states of the Commonwealth of Independent States were invited to the opening . The Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli gave a concert during the celebrations. The organization of the opening ceremony cost more than ten million US dollars.

Invited to the opening of Khan Shatyr were Dmitri Medvedev , the then President of Russia , Viktor Yanukovych , the President of Ukraine , Abdullah Gül , the President of Turkey , Aljaksandr Lukashenka , the President of Belarus , Serzh Sargsyan , the President of Armenia , Emomalij Rahmon , the President Tajikistan , Rosa Otunbajewa , the President of Kyrgyzstan , Muhammad bin Zayid Al Nahyan , the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Abdullah II , King of Jordan .

The building took four years to build. The construction costs were officially 290 million US dollars . The project was financed by a Turkish and Russian investor. The 150 meter high structure is made of sun-permeable plastic ( ETFE ) from Vector Foiltec and has been the largest tent in the world since its completion. On the site, which has an area of ​​around 100,000 m² and is larger than ten soccer fields, a shopping entertainment center with around 180 shops, a cinema, food court, spa and wellness center, entertainment center (cosmodrome) and around 6,000 m² was built on six floors large aqua park with two swimming pools and a wave pool.

The retail trade is spread over the basement, ground floor and first floor. In the basement there is a supermarket, an electronics store and various service providers on an area of ​​4,000 m². Textile suppliers such as the Inditex group (Zara, Bershka, Stradivarius, Massimo Duti, Pull & Bear), GAP, Mexx, etc. are primarily found on the ground and first floors . Companies such as Adidas , Reebok and Nike are represented in the sports sector . Debenhams and New Yorker opened their first branches in Kazakhstan in Khan Shatyr. The cinema with six projection rooms is also located on the first floor . Also on the first floor are most of the local Kazakh retailers. On the second floor there is the food court as well as various restaurants and cafés. The cosmodrome with video games and bumper cars is also on the same floor. On the third floor there is a wellness spa center on one half and a wild water course with greenery and a café on the other half .

The Aquapark is located on the top floor and has a direct connection to the spa center. In the aquapark there is a wave pool, a swimming pool, a giant slide and a café. The park is complemented by a heated sandy beach. The aquapark is roofed separately so that the area can be heated up to 30 degrees.

A 38 meter high drop tower is located in the center of the center as a major entertainment attraction. The boarding station for the monorail is located next to the whitewater run on the third floor , where you can take a tour of the whole center. It is around 400 meters long.

There are around 400 parking spaces in an underground car park and another 1,500 parking spaces outdoors. Khan Shatyr is currently on the outskirts in the new part of Nursultan. An expansion of the city beyond Khan Shatyr is planned so that the tent will belong to the later city center of Nursultan. Khan Shatyr is in line with the Bayterek Tower , the Presidential Palace and the Pyramid of Peace and Unity .
