The Kidd Mine or Kidd Creek Mine is a copper - zinc underground mine near the city of Timmins , Ontario , Canada . It is owned by Glencore and operated by Kidd Operations, one of its subsidiaries. The mine was formerly owned by Xstrata Copper , Falconbridge , and Texas Gulf Sulfur . The ore from the Kidd mine is processed into ore concentrate at the Kidd Metallurgical Site smelter , located 27 km southeast of the mine ; Until 2010 this was also the smelter of the mine and produced refined metal there. After much of the smelter's shutdown, the concentrate will be transported to Quebec for further processing.
With a maximum depth of 3,140 meters, the mine is the deepest base metal mine in the world. This enormous depth and its northern location mean that the deepest point of the mine 2733 meters below sea level is the lowest accessible point and the accessible point with the shortest distance to the center of the earth .
history
The Kidd Mine copper-zinc-silver deposit was discovered in 1964 by the Texas Gulf Sulfur Corporation. During the initial phase of exploration for the site, also known as Kidd-55, Company employees were involved in insider trading in the shares of Texas Gulf Corp. involved. The subsequent lawsuit, prosecuted by the Securities and Exchange Commission , resulted in a fundamental decision that all market participants should have the right to "equal access to basic information" about the project.
The mine started production as an open pit in 1966 and was later continued as an underground mine . In addition to the main products of copper and zinc ore, other metals such as silver and lead are produced as by-products.
The Kidd Creek Mine is the type locality for the mineral kiddcreekite, first discovered and described there in 1984 by DC Harris, AC Roberts, RI Thorp, AJ Criddle and CS Stanley .
geology
The Kidd Mine deposit is one of the largest volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits and one of the largest non-ferrous metal deposits in the world. It lies within the archaic Abitibi greenstone belt of the Canadian Shield . The ores of the deposit were formed about 2.7 billion years ago at the bottom of an ocean. In the course of accompanying scientific work during the expansion of the mine from 2013, the oldest fossil water resources on earth were found; the age of the water trapped in rock cavities has been dated up to 2 billion years.
Current situation
The Kidd Mine and Met Site Complex employ approximately 850 employees and subcontractors. In 2008, with the help of a 120 million dollar investment, the operating company began expanding the mine and deepening the production sections up to 2920 meters. This investment increases the potential of the Kidd Mine by 3.4 million tons of ore. The expansion includes three new production levels and a deepening of the conveyor ramp from the 9100 level (approximately at 2700 m depth) to the 9600 level (approximately at 2900 m Depth) where the cargo bay is located. Furthermore, the ventilation and mountain offset systems were expanded up to the new sections. This extended the production phase until 2021.
