Kill Me Three Times - You Only Die Three Times (Original Title: Kill Me Three Times ) is an Australian black humor thriller from 2015 . Directed by Kriv Stenders and written by James McFarland . The film premiered at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival .

One of the main roles is played by British film actor and comedian Simon Pegg , who is known, among other things, for his roles in the films of the Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy . The film does not follow a chronological plot, but begins in the middle of the story. The individual stages of action are shown one after the other without any connection, so that the viewer only gradually gets to understand the connections. This system has already been used very successfully by Quentin Tarantino in several of his works such as Kill Bill - Volume 1 and Kill Bill - Volume 2 .

action

The film begins with a scene in which a single man flees through an open pit from private detective and killer Charlie Wolfe. The casual Wolfe pursues him with little enthusiasm, but still manages to bring him down with the help of his sniper rifle. Then Wolfe got a call, which he answered with the words "I'll be there in an hour!"

In the tranquil Eagles Nest in Western Australia, the dental surgeon Nathan Webb, played by Sullivan Stapleton, is plagued by massive money problems due to his betting debts. His wife Lucy thinks he is a failure and is generally very dominant towards him. To get Nathan's money problems under control, they decide to carry out an insurance fraud and fake Lucy's death in order to get the money from her life insurance. For this they need a real corpse and decide to kill Nathan's patient Alice, who has announced that she will receive treatment that day. To do this, Nathan swaps Lucy's x-rays and documents with Alice's in order to be able to fake Lucy's supposed death during a later autopsy of the body. When Alice enters the practice, Nathan is drugged and stowed in his car. On the way to the meeting point, Nathan stops at Dylan's gas station to buy gas that is needed for the further course of the crime. There he meets Charlie Wolfe for the first time, who is clinging to Nathan's heels. Lucy and Nathan sink Alice's red VW Beetle in a quarry before they stop on a country road to pack Alice into Lucy's Audi A3. Alice, who has meanwhile awakened from her numb sleep in the trunk of Nathan's car, is able to overpower Nathan with a wheel wrench when opening the tailgate and flee, but is caught up by Lucy and brought back shortly afterwards. The two put Alice in the driver's seat of Lucy's car, put on her Lucy's wedding ring and pour gasoline over the vehicle before setting it on fire and propping it down a cliff. In addition, the two found a bag with $ 250,000 in Alice's wagon earlier . However, the two have no idea that they were watched and filmed by Wolfe throughout their act.

The alcoholic and violent motel owner Jack suspects his wife Alice of infidelity and therefore hires Wolfe to monitor his wife. He follows Alice and can actually watch her meeting with Dylan and filming the two of them sleeping together. The next day, Jack meets with Wolfe to discuss the results of his work and to pay Wolfe. Wolfe shows Jack the video of Alice and Dylan, whereupon Jack assigns him to murder Alice. Meanwhile, Alice, who is about to leave Jack, empties his safe and drives to Nathan to undergo dental treatment after one of her teeth splintered after being hit by Jack.

Wolfe wants to demand the money from Jack for the murder of Alice, but Jack discovers that his safe has been ransacked and puts Wolfe off until the next day. The corrupt police officer Bruce discovers the alleged accident site and Lucy's burned-out and destroyed car at the foot of a cliff. He then drives to Nathan to confront him with his betting debts with a bookmaker friend. He also asks Nathan about Lucy's car and explains that he knows exactly what he and Lucy are up to and that he also wants a share of the life insurance money after Nathan pays the bookmaker. Meanwhile, Dylan visits Jack in his motel to find out from him the whereabouts of Alice. Jack reveals to him that Alice is dead, whereupon Dylan shoots Jack with his revolver and escapes. Meanwhile, the viewer notices that Alice woke up before the car fell and was able to escape the burning vehicle before it crashed on the cliffs.

Wolfe gives Nathan an envelope with photos showing Lucy and Nathan doing what they did to Alice and asks Nathan for the bag with the stolen money. Nathan is supposed to take it to the quarry where he sank Alice's car. Once there, Nathan is first shot by Wolfe after provoking him and then blown up together with his car. Wolfe is injured by Nathan with a knife, but is able to take the money and makes his way to Jack in order to demand the money from him for the murder of Alice, although he did not commit it. He arrives at Jack's motel only a short time after Dylan and finds the dead Jack in his office. Bruce enters the office shortly after Wolfe and although Wolfe assures him that he has nothing to do with Jack's death, he doesn't believe him. Wolfe then shoots Bruce.

Meanwhile, Lucy is at home. Wolfe enters the house and surprises her in the shower. It turns out that Wolfe and Lucy were having an affair, and Wolfe reveals to Lucy that he killed Nathan. Lucy is furious because only Nathan was able to claim the money for the life insurance and now the murder of Alice has become unnecessary. Dylan steps in and wants to know who is responsible for Alice's murder. In an argument between Wolfe, Dylan and Lucy, Dylan accidentally shoots Lucy and is shot in the shoulder by Wolfe. At this point Alice appears and a fight ensues between Alice and Wolfe, in which Wolfe falls over a parapet and is impaled by a metal pole. Alice and Dylan are reunited and leave the place. The film ends with the impaled Wolfe answering a call on his cell phone with the words “I'll be there in an hour, or let's say two hours!”.

reception

The film received mostly negative reviews. At Metacritic the film received a Metascore of 30/100, at Rotten Tomatoes 14 percent of the 49 reviews were positive.

The film service says, "in the brilliantly beautifully photographed, but at times quite confusing series of episodes", "well-behaved actors [...] would navigate in the footsteps of Tarantino through a chaotic mixture of murder, blackmail and revenge".

James McFarland was nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the 2015 AACTA Awards .
