Career

Little is known of Kim Il-ong, whose name is often incomplete with "Kim Il". The 1.58 meter tall athlete, who always wrestled light flyweight, first appeared on the International Wrestling Mat in 1991 and was Junior World Champion that year ahead of Park Young-man , South Korea and Namig Abdullajew , Soviet Union . In the same year he also took part in the World Championships in Varna , where he finished second behind Wugar Orudschow from the Soviet Union. The defeat in the final of this championship against Wugar Orudschow was the only one he ever suffered at an international championship.

In 1992 he was Asian champion in Tehran ahead of Tserenbaataryn Chosbajar from Mongolia . At the Olympic Games in 1992 in Barcelona , he dominated his weight class and was clear with wins over Wugar Orudschow, CIS, Aldo Martínez , Cuba , Marin Nedkow, Bulgaria , Reiner pitchfork , Germany and Kim Jong-shin , South Korea , Olympic champion .

In 1993 Kim Il-ong took part in the Asian Cup in Ulan Bator and won there too, again ahead of Tserenbaataryn Chosbajar.

After this championship he was unable to take part in several international championships (World Cup 1993 in Toronto , World Cup 1994 in Istanbul , Asian Games 1994 in Hiroshima and World Cup 1995 in Atlanta ) because his country boycotted participation in these championships for political reasons.

He only appeared on the mat again at the 1996 Asian Championships in Xiaoshan / China, where he immediately won ahead of Luwsan-Ischiin Sergelenbaatar from Mongolia. He also returned to the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, where he won his second gold medal with victories over Fariborz Besarati, Sweden , Wiktor Efteni , Ukraine , Jung Soon-won , South Korea and Armen Mkrtchyan from Armenia .
