Kim Jung-joo (born November 11, 1981 in Jinju , Gyeongsangnam-do ) is a former South Korean boxer . Kim was a bronze medalist at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, and a gold medalist at the 2002 Asian Games and 2004 Asian Championships.
Career
Kim played his first international championship in 2002 at the Asian Games , where he immediately won a gold medal in the welterweight division (-69 kg). He beat Non Boonjumnong , Thailand (28:13) in the semifinals . The following year he also took part in the World Championships , but had to admit defeat in the round of 16 to Baqtijar Artajew , Kazakhstan (29:10).
In 2004 Kim started at the Olympic Games and, after victories over Vitali Grushak , Moldova (23:20) and Juan Novoa, Colombia (25:23), reached the semifinals, which he won against the later silver medalist Lorenzo Aragón , Cuba (38:10), lost and thus won the Olympic bronze medal.
At the Asian Games in 2006 , Kim had to admit defeat in the first fight to the later silver medalist Angkhan Chomphuphuang, Thailand (22:16). In 2008 he was able to qualify for the Olympic Games via the Asian Olympic qualification tournament, in which he after a narrow victory over Jack Culcay-Keth , Germany (+11: 11) and further victories over John Jackson, British Virgin Islands (10: 0), and Demetrius Andrade , USA (11: 9), reached the semi-finals again in 2004, but this time had to be content with a bronze medal. He lost to Baqyt Särsekbajew , Kazakhstan (10: 6).
After this success, Kim ended his career and graduated as a physical education teacher.
