In 2005, he played five games for the North Korean national team during qualifying for the 2006 World Cup . In the final round of the East Asian Championship in 2005 , he finished third as a regular goalkeeper with North Korea, and in 2008 he took part again in the final tournament as a substitute for Ri Myong-guk . Ri was also the regular goalkeeper during the successful qualification for the 2010 World Cup , while Kim played on the reserve bench in all 14 games of the 2nd and 3rd qualifying rounds.
