History and description

"Crouching child" by Reinhold Kniehl in front of the
Maria Juchacz House , which is now being looked after by the Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO)

In the postwar period , the architect built Ernst Zinsser together with his colleague Weidner in Prinzengarten that far from the modern main building of the University of Hannover at the Welfengarten borders, a ground-floor building for day care for children. He built a structure in the form of a horizontal letter Z on the planned property . By extending the southern as well as the northern structure beyond the connecting wing, the architect created small courtyard situations in the outdoor area, both in the entrance area and in the play area.

In the north wing there was originally a room for the after- school care center as well as a further, elongated room, which could be divided by a folding wall , for two kindergarten groups. In the same wing there were also other adjoining rooms as well as the wash and toilet area.

In the south wing, one room was initially used for the crawling group , two more rooms were intended for play therapy . There were also rooms for the staff and the kitchen.

The property consists of a conventionally plastered masonry structure with flush doors and windows. The external appearance is also decisively shaped by flat pitched gable roofs without a roof overhang .

Also in 1955, in front of the Prinzengarten day-care center, which at the time was not fenced in, the 61 cm high sculpture Crouching Child made of shell limestone was erected by the sculptor Reinhold Kniehl .

In 1977 extensive renovation work was carried out according to plans by the Hanover architecture firm Bertram und Partner . The north wing was extended by about six meters in a westerly direction, the extension being harmoniously adapted to the existing structure. The renovation also positively reinforces the desired courtyard situation in the entrance area.

Extensive renovation work was carried out on the property for the Expo 2000 world exhibition . With regard to the preservation of monuments , the daycare center in the Prinzengarten has largely retained its original appearance to this day.
