Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days ( Japanese キ ン グ ダ ム ハ ー ツ 358/2 Days Kingudamu Hātsu Surī Faibu Eito Deizu Ōbā Tsū ; acronym : KH 358/2 Days) is an action role-playing game released in 2009 for the Nintendo DS handheld console . It was developed by Square Enix and published by Disney Interactive Studios and Square Enix, in Europe also by Eidos Interactive . The game is the fifth part of the Kingdom Hearts video game series and is an intermediate piece that begins towards the end of the first game, Kingdom Hearts , and continues through the sequel to the beginning of the third game, Kingdom Hearts II . The story is told from the perspective of Roxas, Soras Nobody, and shows his life in Organization XIII and his relationship with the other organization members Axel and Xion.

It includes 3D graphics and a single player as well as a multiplayer mode . The game was introduced at the 2007 Tokyo Game Show and was later announced for release in the US and Europe. A special version of the game for the Nintendo DSi was released in Japan . The game was released in Japan on May 30, 2009, in the US on September 29, 2009, and in Europe on October 9, 2009.

Gameplay

358/2 Days includes the same action - RPG style as its predecessors games. To achieve this, the game involves the minimal use of the touchscreen screen, and it is also possible to play the game through without ever having used it. The game includes a single as well as a multiplayer mode, whereby the single player mode includes the story based on the Disney worlds from the previous games and progresses in days. In single player mode you control the character Roxas, the protagonist of the game, on various missions, where he is accompanied by other members of the organization.

The story of the game is straight from one event to the next, usually by a cutscene separately. In addition, there are several side quests available that bring the player symbols and crowns, which can then be exchanged for all kinds of items in the Morgyladen. Pretty much all of the gameplay takes place on linked maps, which is where the battles take place. The combat system is similar to that of its predecessor games, so the battles are still fought in real time, while your own character is freely controllable and strikes with the sword at the push of a button or works attack or regeneration spells via a menu .

358/2 Days has a new gameplay technique, the blackboard system, which works in a similar way to the card-based system in Chain of Memories . The player fills his various skill, magic and level boards in the spaces provided and equips himself with them. For example, you cannot use some magic if you have not created the corresponding boards, whereas you can use the magic several times if you equip it several times. You can also add special plates to your weapon, making it more powerful. There are also special connection boards with connection zones in which other suitable boards can be used and thus improve or strengthen the ability.

Also new is the limit breaker function, which was previously seen in Square's Final Fantasy series, which can be activated when the player's LP falls into the yellow area. Each character has their own set of abilities in Limit Breaker mode, which are usually stronger and have a greater range than normal attacks. The limit breaker can be upgraded by the end limit board, which unleashes true power in the form of a figure-dependent special attack.

Multiplayer is selected separately in the game menu and is mission-based, including collaborative and competitive battles with other players. There up to four players can play as one of the fourteen members of Organization XIII, each member with different weapons, skills and values. In multiplayer mode, Sora, Donald, Goofy, King Mickey and Riku can also be selected as they are unlocked during the course of the main story. 358/2 Days also has a chat system for communication between the players, but this overlaps the PictoChat in the DS.

Location

As with the other games in the series, the player enters a collection of different worlds based on different locations from the Disney films : Agrabah from Aladdin , the Castle of the Beast from Beauty and the Beast , the Arena of Olympus from Hercules , Halloween Town from Nightmare Before Christmas , the wonderland from Alice in Wonderland and Neverland from Peter Pan , with a chain of islands that are new to the game series, instead of the pirate ship from Captain Hook and Big Ben from the first Kingdom Hearts game. The game also includes worlds specially created by Square Enix for the game series. The most famous of them is the World That Never Was, which was seen in the secret ending of Kingdom Hearts and serves as the main storyline in the game, followed by Twilight Town, a very popular world. The Castle of Oblivion and the Isle of Fate appear in cutscenes .

characters

The game revolves around Roxas, who was introduced at the beginning of Kingdom Hearts II . Roxas was born as Nobody from Sora, the protagonist of the game series, when Sora briefly lost his heart in the first Kingdom Hearts game and was thus transformed into a heartless person. He is of Organization XIII, a group of powerful nobody who are the main antagonists of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories and Kingdom Hearts II . Like Sora, Roxas has the power to use the Keyblade, a special key-like weapon against the dark. The other members of Organization XIII, especially Roxa's best friend, Axel, who also appeared in Chain of Memories for the first time, also play an important role. New to the game is Xion, the newest, fourteenth, member of the organization, a girl who resembles Sora's friend Kairi and, like Roxas, can use the keyblade.

Other characters appearing include Naminé, a girl with the power to manipulate memories; DiZ, an enigmatic man wrapped in bandages; Riku, Sora's best friend; and King Mickey , Riku's ally and King of Disney Castle. Sora, the main character in the previous games, also appears in the plot along with his two allies Donald Duck and Goofy , although they rarely appear in the form of flashbacks and memory-based sequences. Also appearing are tomcat Karlo , a constant villain, and Hayner, Pence and Olette, a trio of friends from Twilight Town, all of whom first appeared in Kingdom Hearts II . As with the other games in the series, each Disney world has multiple characters who appear in the respective films on which the worlds are based. On the other hand, apart from a moogle who runs a shop for the organization, the game does not contain any other characters from any final fantasy game.

history

The newly formed Roxas is first discovered in Twilight Town by Xemnas, the leader of Organization XIII, and recruited by him as the thirteenth member. In contrast to other nobody, Roxas lacks memories of his original self, Sora, but over time he develops his own personality. Every day Roxas is sent on missions to other worlds, either alone or in the company of a colleague, in order to defeat large numbers of the Heartless with his keyblade and thus uncover the stolen hearts, with which the organization wants to create Kingdom Hearts in order to restore complete beings to become. Roxas is placed under the supervision of Axel, with whom he befriends. One day, Axel is sent to Castle Oblivion, the setting for Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories , along with a group of other members , connecting Roxas with a girl named Xion, who joined the organization shortly after Roxas. Roxas and Xion are linked by their similarities, including Xion's ability to use the keyblade and lack of memories of their past. Some time later, due to the change in Sora's memories during the events in Chain of Memories , Roxas falls into a coma and only wakes up a few weeks later when Axel is the only one to return from the Castle of Oblivion.

Over time, Xion, Roxas and Axel become good friends. However, after a confrontation with Riku, she is upset with herself and distances herself from her friends in order to learn more about herself. She eventually discovers that she is just a Xemnas-made replica of Sora's memories as a possible replacement for Roxas, and her existence prevents the regaining of Sora's lost memories. Xion is torn between staying with her friends and merging with Sora, as Riku advised her to do, but ultimately decides to leave the organization after her powers have increased dramatically and Roxas' powers have been weakened at the same time . Understanding Xion's situation, Axel allows her to escape, but loses Roxas' trust. After Roxas learns from Xemnas who Xion is, he increasingly doubts the motives of the organization and his own identity, so that he finally leaves the organization out of frustration and leaves Axel depressed.

Roxas goes to Twilight Town, where he was attacked by Xion, who was changed by Xemnas in order to absorb Roxas at her target and then become Sora. However, Xion is defeated and shortly before they disband, Roxas asks if he could stop Xemna's plan before it merges with Sora, which would make all memories of her disappear. Roxas then returns to the world that never was to do this, but is stopped by Riku, who has been commissioned by DiZ to bring Roxas to him. When Roxas defeats Riku, he releases the darkness in his heart, taking the form of Ansem, Xehanort's Heartless, and ultimately making sure that he is the stronger. After the fight, Riku brings Roxas to DiZ, who puts him in a virtual version of Twilight Town without his memories of Organization XIII, so that in the end he can merge with Sora and thus complete the recovery of Sora's memories.

Development and publication

358/2 Days was directed by Tetsuya Nomura and Tomohiro Hasegawa and is the first game in the game series to be developed by Square Enix alone . It was announced along with Kingdom Hearts coded and Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep at the Tokyo Game Show on September 29, 2007, where a trailer for the game was shown under high security. Further trailers and a playable demo version were made available at Jump Festa in December 2007 and at a private party in August 2008. In the demo version, the single player as well as the multiplayer mode were shown. Xion was also featured in the new trailers and the multiplayer version.

Even before the first planning was decided, the Nintendo DS was already set as the platform for the game . The development team wanted gameplay similar to previous games, but realized that the number of buttons available on the Nintendo DS could be an issue. Some of the DS features, such as using the stylus , are not used to keep the gameplay similar to previous games. Sequences from Sora from the first Kingdom Hearts game are repeatedly built into the game, and Roxas has a different type of gameplay in each world. The game logo was kept in warm colors to refer to the sunset in Twilight Town. The title, "358/2 Days", is a code, the meaning of which, according to Nomura, the player will only understand at the very end of the game and that the word "Day" was added as a reference to the daily life of Organization XIII. Although Birth by Sleep was the first of the three new games to be developed, 358/2 Days was released first. The release of the game was initially planned for the end of 2008, but later Square Enix postponed the date to February 2009. Ultimately, the release date for Japan was postponed again, now to May 30, 2009. A release in the US was announced in December 2008, and was finally released on September 29, 2009. In Europe and Australia , the game was released on October 9 and 22, 2009, respectively.

Merchandising

As with the previous games, Square Enix published an Ultimania book, something like a solution book , for Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days . A three-part light novel series based on the game, written by Tomoko Kanemaki and illustrated by Shiro Amano , was also released. Part one was published on 30 July 2009, part two on 28 January 2010 and the third and final part in May 2010. Also, a manga - adaptation of Amano as two Tankōbons published.
