Kingfisher Sky is a Dutch progressive metal band from The Hague , South Holland . Her debut album Hallway of Dreams was released in October 2007 by Suburban Records .

Band history

In 2001 Ivar de Graaf made the decision to leave the successful Dutch band Within Temptation and instead concentrate on his own music. Together with singer Judith Rijnveld , he was looking for a way to combine their two musical influences in songs that should not be tied to a specific genre or style. With influences like Porcupine Tree and Kate Bush , but also opera singers like Cecilia Bartoli and traditional folk music in their heads, they started recording their songs in their home studio in 2005.

With seven completed songs they went to Suburban Records and signed a record deal in 2006 . Bassist Eric Hoogendoorn was the first to join the band. In January 2007 Ruud Jolie (guitarist of Within Temptation) introduced Ivar and Judith Daan Janzing. After a short audition, Janzig Kingfisher Sky also joined. In March, George van Olffen followed on keyboard . Due to his solo in the song Through My Eyes and his 15-year friendship with Ivar, Edo van der Kolk (guitar) finally completed the band. In May 2007 Kingfisher Sky recorded their first album Hallway of Dreams ; produced by Jochem Jacobs (Textures) and Bouke Visser (Split Second Sound). The debut album was released in October 2007 on the Suburban Records label. Suburban Records also made contact with the concert promoter SOZ Concerts, who organized the first appearances in the Netherlands.

Because they wanted to offer the audience something special at a concert in their hometown, they asked Maaike Peterse ( Ayreon ) in January 2008 to accompany the song Big Fish on the cello . Since this cooperation proved to be extremely successful, Maaike became the seventh member of the band. In March 2008 the label Laser's Edge Records ( Riverside , Zero Hour) released Hallway of Dreams in the United States of America . Tonefloat Records ( Porcupine Tree , Roger Waters ) also released the album on vinyl . In August 2008, Hallway of Dreams was released in Japan (Disk Union). The album is now also available in Great Britain , Italy , France and Germany . In July 2009, keyboardist George van Olffen left the band to pursue other musical interests. A permanent replacement was found in David Gutiérrez Rojas, who joined the band in November. Guitarist Daan Janzing left the band at the end of April 2010 in order to be able to devote himself entirely to his band My Favorite Scar in the future . However , he can still be heard on the second studio album Skin of the Earth .

style

Ivar's progressive rock and traditional folk influences met Judith's classical background as well as her love for soul music and artists like Aretha Franklin . From this mixture, combined with their common preference for bands and artists like Porcupine Tree , Jethro Tull , Peter Gabriel , Kate Bush and Tori Amos , new songs emerged.
