Kingston (also called Jersey Town ) is an unincorporated community in Adams County, Mississippi in the United States .

The settlement was founded in 1784 in what was then British West Florida and was one of the first white settlers to settle in Adams County.

history

The area was settled in 1772 by Richard and Samuel Swayze of New Jersey who acquired 1900 acres (770 hectares ) of land. A number of families from New Jersey followed them and; the actors William Holden and Patrick Swayze are descendants of them.

In 1773, Samuel Swayze, a congregational pastor, organized what was then the first Protestant church in British West Florida. The church only existed until his death in 1784.

An early settler, Caleb King, laid the foundation stone for Kingston in 1784 and named it after himself. King was a land surveyor and came to the New Jersey settlers' settlement to survey the newly acquired land. King returned briefly to New Jersey to marry Richard Swayze's daughter Mary; thereafter the couple returned to Mississippi.

Tobias Gibson, founder of Port Gibson, Mississippi , founded a Methodist Church in Kingston in 1799 . The Kingston Methodist Church was built in 1802 of logs, and its construction was the first of a Protestant community in the former Mississippi Territory . In 1822, Caleb King's son-in-law Daniel Farrar donated a piece of land on which a brick church was built.

Kingston prospered in the early decades of the 19th century. In 1824 there were three department stores and a number of shops, and the village had about 150 residents. In 1840 a tornado destroyed most of Kingston. At the beginning of the 20th century, Kingston only had a doctor's office, church and house.

present

Kingston Methodist Church and graveyard are on the south side of the settlement. They were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The fire station of the volunteer fire brigade is located west of the settlement core.
