Kingston is a dependent community in the US state of Rhode Island and belongs to the city of South Kingstown .
geography
Kingston is located about 40 kilometers southwest of Providence on the southern edge of the Providence Metropolitan Area , a metropolitan area on the Atlantic coast with 1.5 million inhabitants around Providence, about 40 km southwest of Boston and 200 km northeast of New York . The parish is essentially divided between the settlements of Kingston and West Kingston, which are about two kilometers apart. It has an area of 4.1 km², the mean height is 75 m above sea level. The parish is surrounded by forest, only in the area between Kingston and West Kingston are larger agricultural areas.
The University of Rhode Island is located in Kingston . It was founded in 1889 as the Rhode Island Agricultural College , renamed Rhode Island College in 1909 and the University of Rhode Island in 1953 .
Worth seeing is the 120-year-old train station on the historic Amtrak north-east line in West Kingston.

At the 2000 census there were 5,446 people in Kingston. Almost 87% of the population were white , almost 5% Asian and 3.5% African American , the rest of the population was split between different ethnic groups. The per capita income was US $ 10,952 and nearly 9% of the population lived below the poverty line.
history
Kingston was originally called Little Rest , but was renamed in 1826. The parish was the county seat of Washington County (formerly Kings County) between 1752 and 1894 . The earlier importance of the community can be seen in the architecture. The historic buildings now serve other purposes. An example of this is the library, which is located in the building of the former County Court House , where the Rhode Island General Assembly alternated with Newport and Providence.
