Oerlikon Church

The Oerlikon Church is an Evangelical Reformed Church in the city of Zurich . It is in the Oerlikon quarter at the intersection of Oerlikonstrasse and Regensbergstrasse .

history

Oerlikon belonged to the Schwamendingen community until 1872 and experienced rapid growth with the construction of the Nordostbahn , which opened in 1855, and the industry that developed on it. In 1905, the Reformed parish of Oerlikon held a limited competition to build a representative church. The jury did not award a first prize; the architects Robert Angst and Adolf Asper shared the second prize. 1906–1908, the Oerlikon church was built according to plans by Adolf Asper (1860–1921) and Gustav Gull . In the years 1941 and 1973–1974 the interior and 1977–1978 an exterior renovation took place. During the last renovation in 2008, the original windows on the left and right of the organ were reopened.

Building description

Exterior design

The Oerlikon church is surrounded by parkland and is visible from afar due to its building site on a small hilltop. A curved path leads from Regensbergstrasse to a forecourt in front of the church. The church has a cruciform floor plan and, with its centralized church space, is in the tradition of Reformed preaching churches. Unlike the same time built Buhl - and Cross Church is not in the style of historicism designed, but comes with its curved, cantilevered roof gables and romanisierenden arched windows, its rustic stonework and rural spire the Heimatstil close. The rustic construction of the masonry made of Bollinger sandstone underlines its simple character. According to the architect Adolf Asper, the church in Oerlikon should be "a real Swiss church, in plain, simple forms without any ostentation, but solid and massive." An open columned hall forms the main entrance in the northeast, in the southwest the church is closed off by a three-sided choir .

Characteristic for the appearance of the church is its slender, campanile-like tower with its high pointed spire on its eastern corner. The bell cage hides a four-part bell that was cast in 1907 by the bell caster Jules Robert in Porrentruy . It sounds in the Salve Regina motif (major triad with sixth).

inner space

The interior of the church is a large room with a domed vault above the crossing and with galleries in all four arms of the cross. Opposite the main entrance is the pulpit wall with a raised pulpit , in front of it the Lord's Supper table , behind it the choir stage with the organ. Three glass windows in the gables show allegories of church music and hymn, as well as a thorn-crowned head of Christ. These windows were designed by Georg Röttinger . The images of the evangelists at the beginning of the arch of the crossing were made in a baroque style by M. Schmid, Munich. The pulpit wall is made of light Savonnières stone and has Art Nouveau elements. The pulpit wall comes from Paul Abry, Zollikon. Two paintings with depictions of the Sermon on the Mount on both sides of the pulpit were made by M. Schmid, Munich and round off the historical design of the church.

organ

The first organ was built for the church as early as 1908 . It was a pneumatic membrane shutter organ that was built by Carl Theodor Kuhn , Männedorf. The instrument had 33  stops on three manuals and a pedal . In 1935 this first organ was sold to the Catholic parish Herz Jesu , which installed it in their church in Oerlikon and used it until 1969. The Reformed Church in Oerlikon received its second organ in 1936, which was built by Metzler Orgelbau AG, Dietikon and Orgelbau Maag , Zurich, although it is not known whether the instrument was created together or whether the two organ builders worked on the organ one after the other . In 1967 this second organ was replaced by the current one. It is an instrument made by Orgelbau Geneva AG. It is an instrument with electric action. In 1981 an electrical setter system was installed by Orgelbau Geneva. In 1986 an overhaul was carried out by the same company. In 1990 a new setter system was installed by Organ Builders Geneva.
