Church in Borgfeld

The church in Borgfeld in Bremen - Borgfeld , Borgfelder Landstraße 15 is essentially one of the oldest churches in Bremen.

history

From 1113 the Borgfeld area south of the Wümme was drained and cultivated by Dutchmen on behalf of the archbishop . In 1281 (other sources 1384) there were the first references to the church in Borgfeld. The small single-nave, partly Romanesque and early Gothic village church has a Gothic, square west tower with a tent roof.

During the Thirty Years War in 1627 imperial troops badly damaged the village and the church. The bells were lost. In 1640 the church tower was rebuilt in Gothic style and new bells were hung. In 1701 the municipality replaced the half-timbered structure in the tower with a brick structure. From 1731 to 1733 the nave was extended by more than half of the medieval structure. Borgfeld had around 90 inhabitants at that time. In 1869 the church tower was rebuilt and three years later two new bells were cast from the old bells and gun bronze. In 1898 some renovations had to be carried out on the church.

The big church bell was melted down in 1918 during the First World War . In 1965 the chancel was redesigned. The slate covering of the church tower was replaced by a copper dome. The windows were roughly the same as they were in the 18th century. In the church, the old pulpit from 1780 from the St. Pauli church from the new town, which was destroyed in the war, was installed.
