The Church of Rute ( Swedish Rute kyrka ) is a Romanesque country church on the Swedish island of Gotland . It is the main church of the parish (swed. Församling ) Bunge in the diocese of Visby .

location

The church is located 43 km northeast of Visby on the road to Fårö in northern Gotland.

Building history

The church building consists of a choir , a two-aisled nave, a tower with galleries on the north and south sides and a small sacristy , which was added in the post-Reformation period. It seems that, with the possible exception of the tower, there was no longer interruption in construction. The choir and nave were probably performed in the middle of the 13th century. The building was completed with the construction of the tower towards the end of the same century. The six tent vaults of the nave are supported by two brick pillars, which presumably replaced the slender columns of the usual Gotland type. In the west, the nave opens to the tower chamber through two arches supported by a column with a leaf-ornamented capital . In the tower chamber there are three medieval limestone tombstones , one of which bears a runic inscription that reads: "Si-tri's heirs had the stone made for Ödvald, his brother, who died in Finland". Two of the medieval churchyard portals have been preserved, one in the south and one in the north. Traces in the churchyard wall and older information show that there was also a portal in the east.

On the north and south walls of the nave there are lime paintings that were created by the Passion Master in the middle of the 15th century . On the north wall the usual Passion Frieze (fragmentary) and on the south wall the story of the childhood of Jesus and scenes from the legend of Catherine of Alexandria are depicted: her accusation before the king - dispute with nine learned men - she contemplates a martyr's pyre - is tortured - beheaded. The vault painting, a rich decoration in the form of loops that branch out in wattle, dates from the late 13th century, but it could have earlier, more simply executed paintings as a predecessor.

inventory

The triumphal crucifix dates from around 1260 and the font from the middle of the 13th century. The nave has paintings from the 15th century. The sandstone altarpiece shows the initials of the Danish King Christian IV (1588–1648) and is therefore likely to have been created in the first half of the 17th century. The middle field shows a representation of Abraham's sacrifice, on the sides Moses and Aaron. It originally comes from the Visborger Schlosskirche . The pulpit was built in 1733. Wall cladding was donated by Sonderburger boatmen in 1730.

The church was restored in 1950/51 according to plans by the architect Erik Fant. A large part of the wall paintings of the nave and all of the vault paintings were brought to light.
