The Episcopal Diocese of Maryland forms part of Province 3 of the Episcopal Church of the United States of America . It includes the city of Baltimore and the counties of northern and central Maryland : Allegany , Anne Arundel , Calvert , Carroll , Frederick , Garrett , Harford , Howard , and Washington . It is one of the nine original Episcopal Church dioceses in the United States and refers to a story that began with the first Christian worship service in Upper Chesapeake Bay under the direction of Captain John Smith .

In 1780, a gathering of Anglican clergy and lay people in Chestertown, Maryland, led to the formation of the Diocese of Maryland, which was in existence when the US Episcopal Church was founded in 1789. The first bishop of the diocese, the Right Reverend Thomas John Claggett , was the first Anglican bishop, who in the US dedicated been. The diocese parish of St. James in Baltimore was the first African American parish in the southern states . A later bishop, John Gardner Murray , was the first to be elected to the office of Presiding Bishop , instead of being the senior member of the college of bishops, as was the custom until then.

The diocese has spun off new dioceses on its original territory twice: first in 1868 when the Eastern Shore counties became the Diocese of Easton and then again in 1895 when the District of Columbia and Montgomery , Prince George's , Charles and St. Mary’s counties became the Diocese of Washington came into being.

The Diocese of Maryland has 117 parishes (of which only 12 have the status of parishes, while the rest are considered missions) with more than 44,200 members. The bishopric is the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Baltimore. On 28 March 2008, the Rev. Canon Eugene Taylor Sutton was elected the 14th Bishop of the Diocese of Maryland and 28 June 2008 consecrated .
