The Church of Viklau is inaugurated as the 12th century country church on the Swedish island of Gotland . It belongs to the parish (Swedish församling ) Vänge in the diocese of Visby . Until the end of 2005 it still belonged to the municipality of Viklau. This church is perhaps most associated with the Viklaumadonna, a wooden sculpture from the 12th century that is now in the State Historical Museum in Stockholm.

location

The church is in the interior of Gotland, 22 km south of Visby , 26 km north of Hemse , 4.5 km south of Roma and 18 km northeast of Klintehamn .

Church building

The Romanesque stone church consists of a rectangular nave with a narrower, just closed choir in the east and a church tower in the west. The sacristy is located in the eastern extension of the choir. The oldest walls can be found in the choir. The nave was built a little later and was probably finished towards the end of the 12th century. The tower followed in the middle of the 13th century. The sacristy was added much later between 1852 and 1853, at the same time as the original apse was demolished . The exterior of the church is decorated with simple arched portals in the south of the choir and nave and in the west of the tower. The window openings did not get their current size until the middle of the 19th century, when the north window of the nave was added. The nave and the lower chorus are represented by a gable roof covered. The tower has pillared sound openings and is crowned by a short point. The interior is also simple and not decorated with frescoes. The nave is covered from the inside by a flat wooden roof. The barrel vault of the choir can be reached via an ogival wall opening. The church was restored in 1930 and 1937 according to plans by the architect Sven Brandel . Another restoration followed in 1984.

Furnishing

  • In the north-eastern corner of the nave is a copy of the Viklaumadonna, the original of which is now in the museum in Stockholm.
  • The triumphal cross is from the 12th century.
  • A decorated with reliefs font of sandstone is probably from the 12th century and is an employee of the master stonemason Hegwald made. In the church there is also a second baptismal font from 1737.
  • Today's pulpit and pews date from the 18th century.
