The church square is located south of Düsseldorf city center in the Unterbilk district . It is in a central location and is therefore also an important transport hub. On the occasion of an extensive redesign in 2004/2005 as part of the Platzda! -Projects of the city of Düsseldorf , fixed market pavilions were built on the church square, similar to the Carlsplatz . These are used for the daily sale of fresh produce such as flowers, fruit, vegetables and fish; there are also localities of several nationalities in these pavilions. The neo-Gothic St. Peter Church forms the end of the southern part .
Significance in the road network
The church square is the intersection of the important inner city streets Elisabethstrasse / Friedrichstrasse and Fürstenwall. There is a parking garage under the square.
The “Kirchplatz” underground station on the Wehrhahn line is on the Elisabethstraße side . The stop is served by the U71, U72, U73 and U83 lines, as well as by several bus lines. Before the subway went into operation, Kirchplatz was the stop of the Düsseldorf tram . Lines 703, 706, 712 and 713 stopped at the Elisabethstraße / Kirchplatz stop when coming from the north and at the Friedrichstraße / Kirchplatz stop when coming from the south. Lines 703 and 713 had their final stop on Kirchfeldstrasse behind St. Peter's Church. In addition, the Rheinbahn operates bus line 725, which also has a stop at Kirchplatz.
Future of the church square
Since the completion of the Wehrhahn Line in 2015/2016 and the associated shutdown of the tram systems around the church square, less space has been required for local public transport . The Kirchplatz station is located south of the Elisabethstrasse / Fürstenwall intersection. It is accessible with an escalator and staircase and an elevator directly from the church square.
history
According to the map ( Plan de Dusseldorff levé en 1759 ), an area (today between Elisabethstrasse, Bilker Allee and Kronenstrasse) was sparsely overgrown with trees and was called "Am Hasenbusche". Only in the area of today's Kronprinzenstrasse was the moated castle , completely surrounded by the Düssel , further down the Kraut-Mühle . At the site of today's church square, in the former Honschaft Mühlenhofen (Unterbilk) , there was a gravel pit, which with mud from the former Lohpohl , the 1842 scale Kaiserteich was filled. The area around the ponds, which were created after the demolition of Düsseldorf's fortifications from 1802, today the Spee'sche Graben , the Schwanenspiegel and the Kaiserteich, had become swampy over time due to the floods of the Rhine and Düssel, and the fortress ditches were completely decayed.
Friedrichstadt , which is adjacent to the church square, was still uninhabited until the middle of the 18th century and largely undeveloped until the middle of the 19th century. The Elisabeth and Friedrichstrasse were created in the year. 1854 In 1876 the intersection with Kirchfeldstrasse was paved. The church square, which was already mentioned at that time, was leveled in 1882, planted with chestnuts in 1883 and a high bowl fountain designed by the architects Tüshaus & von Abbema was set up. Tüshaus and Abbema had also submitted a draft for the parish church of St. Peter to the city council. This plan still envisaged an east-west orientation of the church and significantly smaller dimensions and was later rejected. With the construction of St. Peter's Church, the fountain had to give way, it stood where the tower of St. Peter now rises.
