Unterbilk was originally part of Bilk, which was first mentioned in 799. Up until 1206 Düsseldorf belonged to the parish Alt St. Martin in Bilk, in 1384 in turn Bilk was incorporated into Düsseldorf. The independent district of Unterbilk was created through the construction of the railway line from Neuss to Düsseldorf, which cut through Bilk. The old Bilk south of the railway line kept the name Bilk, the northern part, still called Neustadt at the end of the 19th century, became Unterbilk. Sacred buildings

About 500 meters north of the Alt St. Martin church in the Bilk district at the intersection of Bilker Allee, Volmerswerther Straße, Gladbacher Straße, Neusser Straße , Lorettostraße is the newer Bilker parish church of St. Martin . It has a triangular floor plan. In the choir there is a circular glass window by Hermann Alfred Raddatz with the depiction of Christ as Pantocrator and the four evangelists. Even before the current church was built between 1951 and 1952, there was a chapel and a church at this point. In 1686, at the request of his first wife Maria Anna Josepha of Austria , half-sister of the Habsburg Emperor Leopold , Elector Jan Wellem had the Loreto Chapel built, a replica of the legendary house of the Holy Family of Nazareth from Loreto . The police headquarters and the regional tax office was 1929-1939 at Jürgens built space on the site of a former hussar barracks.
