Unterbilk was originally part of Bilk, which was first mentioned in 799. Up until 1206 Düsseldorf belonged to the parish Alt St. Martin in Bilk, in 1384 in turn Bilk was incorporated into Düsseldorf. The independent district of Unterbilk was created through the construction of the railway line from Neuss to Düsseldorf, which cut through Bilk. The old Bilk south of the railway line kept the name Bilk, the northern part, still called Neustadt at the end of the 19th century, became Unterbilk. In 1876, Düsseldorf's first horse racing track was opened at Lausward in Unterbilk. From 1890 to 1896, the Düsseldorf harbor was built on Lausward. The Crown Prince School was built in 1892.

On the border between Friedrichstadt and Unterbilk, the city fortifications of Düsseldorf once ran in the Napoleonic era. After this was razed , green areas were created there; within this are the Schwanenspiegel and the Kaiserteich .

Ständehaus at the Kaiserteich

The old Prussian provincial parliament in the Ständehaus , which housed the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia from 1946 to 1988 , is also located in the green areas at Schwanenspiegel and the Kaiserteich. Today the historic parliament building houses part of the North Rhine-Westphalia art collection .

The Stadttor high-rise office building is an example of internationally acclaimed architecture in the Unterbilk district. The State Chancellery of North Rhine-Westphalia is also located in the city gate .

The North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts is used for the exchange of ideas and networking. The building was designed by the Düsseldorf architect Hans Schwippert , who later became the rector of the art academy.

Sacred buildings

About 500 meters north of the Alt St. Martin church in the Bilk district at the intersection of Bilker Allee, Volmerswerther Straße, Gladbacher Straße, Neusser Straße , Lorettostraße is the newer Bilker parish church of St. Martin . It has a triangular floor plan. In the choir there is a circular glass window by Hermann Alfred Raddatz with the depiction of Christ as Pantocrator and the four evangelists. Even before the current church was built between 1951 and 1952, there was a chapel and a church at this point. In 1686, at the request of his first wife Maria Anna Josepha of Austria , half-sister of the Habsburg Emperor Leopold , Elector Jan Wellem had the Loreto Chapel built, a replica of the legendary house of the Holy Family of Nazareth from Loreto . In 1698, the Elector's second wife, Anna Maria Luisa de 'Medici , Grand Duchess of Toscana , ordered the superstructure of the chapel, which became a famous and much-visited place of pilgrimage. Police headquarters in Düsseldorf

The police headquarters and the regional tax office was 1929-1939 at Jürgens built space on the site of a former hussar barracks. They show objective, purpose-oriented brick architecture for administrative buildings from the 1920s and 1930s. The presidium has been modernized since 2013 and expanded with extensions.
