The name of the borough can be translated as "pure rice field". Its area is 15.3 km long in north-south direction and 7.8 km in east-west direction. The highest point is the Shirahata-yama (322 m) in the hilly, predominantly forested southern half of the district. The area is drained by the Atsubetsu, Kiyota (with the Ariake waterfall), Ōmagari, Yamabe and Yoshida rivers, all of which are part of the Toyohira catchment area . Part of the district lies in the Tsukisamu Plain, which was formed by the eruption of the Tarumae and Eniwa volcanoes and is covered with volcanic ash .

history

The development of the area began in 1857 with the construction of a road towards Chitose , and in 1873 the first settlers settled. The villages ( mura ) Hiragishi, Toyohira and Tsukisamu merged on April 1, 1902 to form Toyohira municipality, which was part of ( gun ) Sapporo County . In 1908 the community received the status of a district city ( machi ). On May 1, 1961, the city of Toyohira merged with Sapporo, from April 1, 1972, the area belonged to the Toyohira-ku district . The government created what is now Kiyota-ku County on November 4, 1997 by splitting off from Toyohira-ku.
