The StEG II 1257-1272 were freight train - steam locomotives of the Staats-Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (StEG), a private Austrian-Hungarian railway company .

history

Since the operating results of the previous series (StEG series Vn - with the ČSD series 414.3 ) were not satisfied, the StEG locomotive factory in Vienna delivered 15 machines (1257–1271) between 1894 and 1897, and four machines between 1897 and 1900 . In 1897 they were in the third designation scheme of StEG 4401-4419.

The first machines came to the boiler house in Veselí nad Moravou , after nationalization they became the property of the kkStB and were given the series designation  175 , their tenders the designation 38.07 to 25.

In 1918 the machines became the property of ČSD, they were classified as 414.4 and their tenders were given the designation 312.103 to 121. They were used in various railway stations, from 1938 their area of operation shifted to the east of Czechoslovakia . During this period of use, the machines were modernized by retrofitting a Westinghouse air brake, a grease gun, and at the end they received electrical lighting.

She was nicknamed "Pracharny" (German: powder mill) by the staff because of the use of inferior coal. The first decommissioned locomotive was 414,403 in 1938, followed by 414,411 in 1953, and after that the locomotives left the machine service en masse, some with modified boilers. Most recently, the 414,404 and 407 were retired in 1968.

The 414.404 locomotive is now owned by the National Technical Museum in Prague and is now in the Jaroměř Railway Museum , while the 414.407 is on display in the Křimov Railway Museum .

technical features

The boiler, the case of which has been shortened by 400 mm, has undergone significant changes compared to the Vn series. The combustion and smoke chambers were lengthened, which positively changed the relationship between the grate and heating surface of the boiler. The number of heating pipes remained unchanged and the total heating surface could be increased. The grate area of the Belpaire standing boiler was reduced to 3.24 m² and the boiler pressure was increased to 12 atm.

Apart from a few minor changes, the steam engine remained unchanged. Some vehicles were equipped with a Lechatelier type counter-pressure brake, the last three machines received a suction air brake and a housekeeper type speedometer.

The power of the locomotive could be increased to 470 kW compared to 430 kW of the Vn series (ČSD series 414.3). Compared with the kkStB 73 series (in the ČSD series 414.0 ) it had a better friction mass , its only disadvantage was the low permissible speed of 35 km / h.
