Self-portrait of the artist

Klaus Bemmer (born July 15, 1921 in Gaggenau ; † November 17, 1979 in Lunestedt ) was a German painter who was one of the most famous artists of the post-war period in Bremerhaven .

Life

Several musicians and painters are known from his father's French branch of the family, and Klaus Bemmer also developed a remarkable talent for drawing at an early age, which founded his decision to become a painter. In 1937 he began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe . He studied with Professors Siegfried Czerny , Erwin Aichele and Josua Leander Gampp and attended the master class of the naturalist Georg Siebert .

Bemmer had to do his military service in the Navy in France, the Netherlands, Blexen and Bremerhaven. From 1945 he lived with his wife Anni Wöller in their parents' house in Lehe . The two sons were born there.

As a young father, Bemmer had to earn a living for his family by doing activities besides painting. He worked as a ship de-icer, painter and house painter and took on commissioned work as a portrait and decorative painter as well as an illustrator and restorer.

In 1968 Klaus Bemmer bought a house in Lunestedt, on the outskirts of Deelbrügge .

“In Bremerhaven and the surrounding area, Klaus Bemmer is one of the best-known artists of the post-war period and one of the few who was primarily a freelance artist. His pictures, whether port motifs, landscapes, genre pictures or views of the city of Bremerhaven, enjoyed and still enjoy great popularity and are widespread. "

- Elke Grapenthin : Artists in Bremerhaven (see bibliography)

Klaus Bemmer was inspired by the heather, moor and meadow landscape around Lunestedt, the extensive forest areas and life in the village. The motifs had already fascinated him when he was still living in Bremerhaven and painting many motifs in the old town of Lehes and the harbor. But also from Lunestedt he gave regular painting and drawing courses at the adult education center in Bremerhaven. In Lunestedt he taught in elementary school for some time, but then devoted himself entirely to his artistic work. In Lunestedt he often and gladly took part in village life and was known to many residents when he was out on foot, on a moped or bicycle with a beret, sketch pad and easel. In the course of an exhibition of his works for the 1150th anniversary of the town of Lunestedt, it became clear that many farmers had liked to see him while painting in the town.

"Real Bemmer" can be found in many public institutions in the Unterweser region. His work includes oil and tempera pictures, ink and brush drawings, pencil, charcoal and wooden pencil drawings. In addition, two portfolios with brush drawings of Bremerhaven harbor motifs were published.

"His drawings always appear light and relaxed, every line is right, regardless of whether it is about the representation of landscape, architecture or figurative."

- Elke Grapenthin : Artists in Bremerhaven (see bibliography)

Grapenthin highlights the versatility of the artist. He is not considered a native painter, but as a painter with his own style, whose artistic development is perceived far beyond the region. Evidence for this are exhibitions in many places in Germany, in Austria, Italy and France. Works can be found in the Historisches Museum Bremerhaven .
