Klaus Karlbauer

Klaus Karlbauer (born August 23, 1960 in Villach ) is an Austrian film and theater director , composer , multimedia artist and producer.

Life

Karlbauer studied flute, piano and music theory at the Villach Music School and the Klagenfurt State Conservatory . After graduating from the Peraugymnasium , he studied flute, electroacoustic music and composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna . This was followed by a study of stage and film design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna - Erich Wonder master class .

From 1981 to 1995 he worked for the K & K Experimental Studio as a musician, actor, set designer, author and composer. In 1991 he founded his own film and multimedia production ( Mrs. Faust Film until 2004, then Karlbauer Multimediaproduktionen KG , since 2014 Karlbauer Projects KG ), in 1995 with Rosivita (Roswitha Schreiner-Karlbauer) the association for multimedia productions Movie n 'Opera . From 1996 to 2002 he was a lecturer for multimedia composition at the Institute for Electroacoustic Music at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna , since 2010 he has been teaching media theater, sampling, lecture performance, pop and opera and sound at the Institute for Theater, Film and media studies from the University of Vienna .

Karlbauer is active as a screenwriter, director, composer and producer in the field of film (e.g. Winterreise , 1985; life and suffering of the unfortunate Kapellmeister Herr von Ka , 1989; Frau Faust , 1992). In the field of music theater he often worked with the composer Dieter Kaufmann ( Still ist das Land , Sieg über die Sonne and much more). This collaboration resulted in further collaborations with the musicians Gunter Schneider , Wolfgang Mitterer a . v. a. Between 2005 and 2008 he realized three live performances with Andrea Latritsch-Karlbauer . In 2007 he realized the film prologue for the opera of the same name, The Passed Man by Luna Alcalay . Since 2010 the multimedia Work in Progress Fool's Island Project has been created as a live film concert, performance lecture and installation. On October 3, 2012, Fool's Island Project was released as a concept album on vinyl as part of a release concert in Vienna's WUK, followed by numerous appearances in Austria and Germany.

In 2014 the musical project "Kakanische Miniatures" was premiered in the Vienna Burgtheater as part of "Kakanien - Neue Heimaten" and shown again at the invitation of Erste Foundation as part of "Forum Alpbach 2014" together with Oksana Sabushko. In 2014 the CD "Wonder Wheel - Music for E-Zither, Bass Clarinet, Bass Guitar and Electronics" was released and played live several times. 2015 took place the premiere of "What prevents me from writing an opera - Lecture opera" by and with Klaus Karl Bauer as part of the first musical theater days Vienna in plant X . An extended version will be shown in the Freihausgasse Villach Gallery, together with a multimedia exhibition with works by Klaus Karlbauer that were created as part of the production of the Lecture Opera. The term "Lecture Opera" was first used ("invented") by Klaus Karlbauer and represents a further development of the "Lecture Performance" to merge theory and practice.

From 2016 to 2017 Klaus Karlbauer realized "Music for Barbed Wire" and "To live in the Borderlands" in the form of a work in progress, both as a live performance and as an album. The text base for this comes from Trinh T. Minh-ha and her book Elsewhere Within Here - Immigration, Flucht und das Grenzereignis . This work is intended as a critical commentary on political change and examines whether and how sound is able to reflect current events.

In 2018, Klaus Karlbauer composed the music for the stage for the piece “Einestatlos” by the Iranian author, actor and musician Alireza Daryanavrad, and he plays the music live during the performances. A stateless person was premiered on September 21, 2018 as part of the Vienna Week in Werk X on Petersplatz in Vienna. This was followed by numerous performances, most recently on February 25, 2019 in the Münchner Kammerspiele.

On March 19, 2019, the album “Ich bin das Volk - songs about the state of the nation, composed, played and sung by Klaus Karlbauer” was released and presented at a live concert at the Fanialive club in Vienna.
