Klaus Peters (lawyer)

Klaus Peters (born September 25, 1936 in Wuppertal ) is a German administrative lawyer and founding and former chancellor of the Bergische Universität in Wuppertal.

Life

After attending elementary school in Wuppertal (1942–1947), Peters attended the state natural science high school in Wuppertal-Elberfeld (until 1956). He then studied law in Cologne and Berlin (FU) and passed the first state examination in 1960 . In 1963 he obtained the doctorate to the Dr. iur and in 1965 he passed the second state examination in law. From 1965 he worked briefly as a court assessor at the Wuppertal district court and then joined the Wuppertal city administration in the same year.

Peters was initially a consultant in the building department in 1966 and from 1968 personal consultant to the then senior city director Werner Stelly in the Barmer town hall . After founding the comprehensive university in Wuppertal, later renaming it to Bergische Universität Wuppertal (1980 and 2003), Peters headed the responsible municipal coordination office and the department for university issues from 1971 onwards.

On August 1, 1972 he was transferred to the comprehensive university and on September 27, 1972 its first chancellor and head of administration. He held this position until his retirement on September 30, 2001. His successor as Chancellor was Hans-Joachim von Buchka .

In his welcoming address, Klaus Held described when Peters was given honorary citizenship that the university was his life's work. Willfried Penner praised Peters as the university's master builder.
