The Klerechte (official German: awards and similar information ) is a German ordinance that regulates the affixing of awards to wine bottles . Few organizations have the privilege of doing this for well-defined competitions. These competitions are subject to strict regulations.

Awards, which are identified by stickers on wine bottles and are thus easily recognizable for consumers at the point of sale, promote wine sales and are considered an important marketing tool. Such sales promotion measures are supported by support programs in the wine sector by the European Community . Wine producers should be interested in corresponding awards because they guarantee the consumer high quality if the strict test regulations are adhered to. The costs that arise from the additional test should generally be worthwhile.

background

The legal regulation on the right to glue is based on § 30, awards and similar information of the German Wine Ordinance , which in turn refers to paragraph 24, paragraph 2, in conjunction with § 54, paragraph 1 of the Wine Act . It states that the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture publishes a list of the awards and quality marks of the German Agricultural Society (DLG) as well as the awards and quality marks recognized by the state governments in the Federal Gazette at the beginning of a wine year . This list was last expanded by one entry in autumn 2019. In addition to the DLG, the list includes ministries of agriculture, chambers of agriculture and regional winegrowing associations , but also specialist publishers such as Mundus Vini or Busche Verlagsgesellschaft , which document regular wine tastings in their publications .

The federal states are authorized to issue their own ordinances for the cultivation areas they manage. The ordinance has been subject to considerable changes since the legislation was passed in 1995. Before 1995, the affixing of awards was less strictly regulated, as any unregistered organizations such as winegrowers' cooperatives or winegrowing associations could previously attach stickers.

Wine competitions

A wine competition is advertised by an organization with adhesive rights and should be attractive for both the participating wineries and consumers. The topics are correspondingly diverse. In addition to classic Riesling , Merlot , etc. competitions, winegrowers' cooperatives , winegrowers within a wine region or even young winemakers or specialist dealers compete . Seasonally, the best asparagus wines , sparkling wines and mulled wines are compared. The quality wine test , in which the official test numbers (AP number) are assigned and in which a lot is allowed on the market as food, is assessed according to the 5-point system. Wine tests that fight for medals, i.e. for their right to stick, are judged internationally according to the 100-point scale. Although all wines that are already marketable have an AP number, there are also occasional samples that receive less than 60 points and are therefore considered faulty and not marketable.
