The regional elections in France 2021 ( French Élections régionales françaises de 2021 ) took place on June 20 (first ballot) and on June 27 (second ballot).

In the French regions, all incumbent regional presidents across the political camps between the left and the moderate right were able to defend their office. The right-wing Rassemblement National failed again to take over a region. In the first ballot, too, the party was only the strongest party in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur ; in 2015, the RN was the strongest party in six regions.

However, there were changes of power in three overseas territories, namely in French Guiana , Martinique and Réunion . There, left lists were able to prevail against centrist or right lists, which performed best in 2015.

The biggest debate, however, arose over the historically low turnout of only around 33 to 35 percent, depending on the ballot.

Electoral process

There are normally two rounds of voting. If none of the lists, on which women and men must be equally represented, reach an absolute majority in a council in the first round of voting on June 20, 2021, a second round will be due there on June 27, 2021. Lists can be merged, provided that at least one participating list has received at least 10 percent of the votes ( threshold clause ) and each of the other parties at least 5 percent.

The party with the most votes also receives a bonus of 25 percent; the remaining 75 percent will be divided proportionally among all represented formations. The regional councils with their 1757 council members are elected for five years.

Regional results

Compared to the 2015 regional elections, where lists of eligible candidates were withdrawn several times in the second round (which received at least 10 percent in the first round), this was only the case in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur in 2021 . The reason for this was the relative weakness of the Rassemblement National in the first round. Only in Alpes-Côte d'Azur withdrew left and green lists and called for the prevention of the RN.

There were four list mergers in the second round, all between left and green lists. In the regions where the candidates for President Emmanuel Macron's party , La République en Marche , remained below the 10 percent threshold in the first round, they did not join any other list in Hauts-de-France .
