The Kahle Wasen (also Kleiner Belchen , French Petit Ballon ) is a 1,272 meter high mountain in the Vosges . It is located in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park on the border between the municipalities of Linthal (Haut-Rhin) and Sondernach .
"Wasen" generally means a meadow in Old High German (compare also Stübenwasen in the Black Forest ), " Belchen " means, among other things, a flat arched bald mountain in Alemannic. The epithet Klein is used because there are two other Belchen in the Vosges: within sight the Großer Belchen ( Grand Ballon ) and the Alsatian Belchen ( Ballon d'Alsace, Welscher Belchen ). On the eastern side of the Upper Rhine Plain , in the Black Forest, one of the highest mountains is also called Belchen ( Badischer Belchen ). Together with the Swiss Belchen , these mountains form the so-called Belchen system .
A narrow road leads over the Kahler Wasen. At the highest point of this road there is a parking lot, from there the actual summit can be reached after about 600 meters on foot and another 150 meters in altitude.
