The Small Prespa ( Greek Λίμνη Μικρή Πρέσπα Límni Mikrí Prespa ; Albanian Liqeni i Prespes së Vogël , Macedonian Мало Преспанско Езеро Malo Prespansko Ezero ) is a lake on the border between Greece and Albania . The majority is on Greek territory; only the last kilometers of the long western arm extend into Albania. The Small Prespa Lake is separated from the (Great) Prespa Lake in the triangle of Greece, Albania and North Macedonia by a narrow land bridge.
The Small Prespa Lake is located at an altitude of 853 m . The Great Prespa Lake, adjacent to the north, is four meters lower ( 849 m ). The Small Prespa Lake has an area of 45.39 square kilometers. It is up to 10.6 kilometers long and 6.6 kilometers wide. The mean depth was determined to be 6.7 meters, the maximum depth 7.7 meters. Thus, like most other Greek lakes , the Small Prespa Lake is relatively shallow. In contrast, the Great Prespa Lake is significantly deeper with a maximum depth of 53 meters. The water volume of the Kleiner Prespa lake is 320,000,000 cubic meters. The catchment area amounts to 260 square kilometers. The water temperatures averaged 21 ° C and a maximum of 28 ° C.
High mountains surround the lake, in which there are two small islands. In the west there is a passage through the mountains, through which the lake drained to the Devoll River and into the Adriatic Sea during floods after heavy rainfall and in spring during the snowmelt . From the 1950s to around 2000, the Devoll was also diverted into the Kleiner Prespa Lake during floods. The water stored in this way was diverted during the dry seasons through a canal built during the regime of the Labor Party of Albania to irrigate the plain north of Korça . The introduction of the Devolls resulted because of the entrained sediments to a strong silting of the western part of the lake. The Albanian part therefore hardly consists of open bodies of water, but only of reed areas .
A small natural canal to the Great Prespa drains to the north. From there the water flows underground into Lake Ohrid and thus into the Drin river system . The water of the Kleiner Prespa lake is renewed every 3.4 years.
The Prespa lakes are particularly worthy of protection wetlands in the sense of the Ramsar Convention . The Great Prespa Lake forms the center of the Prespa National Park , which was founded jointly by the three neighboring countries and, with an area of around 2000 square kilometers, is one of the largest nature reserves in Europe . The pristine landscape is home to many endangered birds such as pelicans and pygmy shags . The small Albanian part in particular, which is gradually in danger of silting up, is characterized by wide belts of reeds.
Finds such as fossilized shark teeth, leaves, shells and birds suggest that the Prespa Lake was part of a saltwater sea with abundant wildlife in prehistoric times. These finds can be seen in a small museum in the village of Vrondero.
