Small palace

The Kleine Palais (also called Prinzessinnen-Palais ) in Meiningen is a classicist palace of the Dukes of Saxony-Meiningen from the 19th century. Duke Bernhard II had it built as his summer palace by the architect Johann Andreas Schaubach from 1821 . Today it is one of the city's sights as a gem.

location

The Kleine Palais is located at the beginning of the Bernhardstraße boulevard in the city center not far from the old town on the edge of the palace park . The large palace , which was built at the same time , was also built by the architect Schaubach, slightly offset on the opposite side of the street. Opposite is the Hotel Sächsischer Hof , built in 1798 . To the north is the villa of the famous banker Gustav Strupp . To the south of the palace stands the Henneberger Haus , built by Eduard Fritze .

Building

The palace is a prime example of classical architecture in Meiningen. The two-storey building has a gable portico with four Ionic columns and semicircular risalits at the side ends of the building. On the upper floor there is a domed hall based on the Roman model with a trapezoidal coffered ceiling and a semicircular room with an antique stucco frieze.

history

The palace was built from 1821 to 1823 by the architects Johann Andreas Schaubach and Friedrich Weinbrenner on the site of the former lower gate bastion. Duchess Louise Eleonore had a similar building including a domed hall built as Palais Weimar in today's Bad Liebenstein in 1804/05 . From then on, the Kleine Palais served as the summer palace for Duke Bernhard II, Duke of Meiningen, and from 1825, after his marriage to Marie von Hessen-Kassel (1804–1888), as the residence of the duke couple. After the ducal family moved to the converted Great Palace in 1863, the Small Palace was used in various ways. Among other things, the princesses of the ducal house and Johannes Brahms lived here during his stay in Meiningen. Even after the end of the duchy in 1918, it remained in the possession of the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen until 1946. In 1923, under the direction of Karl Behlert, it was converted into a bank building for the Thuringian State Bank . The Small Palace survived the Second World War unscathed. In July 1945 the Soviet occupying power set up a command post for the Meiningen region here. After they moved out, the building was used as a kindergarten from 1967 to 1991 . The building was extensively renovated from 1991 onwards on behalf of Dresdner Bank , which it used as a bank branch from May 1993. The Kleine Palais has been a Commerzbank branch for around 9,500 customers since 2010 . The listed building underwent further renovation in 2012.
