Klein's butterflyfish ( Chaetodon kleinii ) is one of only 12 to 15 centimeters long expectant representatives in tropical coral reefs living butterfly fish (Chaetodontidae).
distribution
It lives in the Red Sea , the Indo-Pacific from the coast of East Africa and South Africa to Hawaii , Samoa , southern Japan , New Caledonia , New South Wales and east to the Galapagos Islands . It is particularly common in New Guinea and the east coast of Australia to Sydney .
Way of life
Small butterfly fish live individually, in pairs, but mostly in small schools, young fish in inner reefs , older ones on outer reefs always near corals. They feed largely on zooplankton . Japanese scientists also found a proportion of 31% soft corals , 17% sea anemones and 3% stony coral polyps in stomach examinations .
Aquarium keeping
Klein's butterflyfish are far better suited for keeping in saltwater aquariums than their relatives, who are for the most part food specialists . It is regarded as the predator of the unloved glass roses and the annoying fire anemones , but like any butterfly fish it can also eat other sea anemones, soft and hard corals, tube worms and giant clams . The individual food preferences differ from individual to individual. He should always be kept as a couple and has spawned in private aquariums. During the spawning process in the evening, after the lighting has been switched off and several previous attempts, the fish slowly swim diagonally, at an angle of 45 °, to the water surface, stopping 10 centimeters below, only to suddenly release eggs and sperm and quickly disappear towards the bottom of the water.
