Architecture and history

The three-story house is one of the oldest secular buildings in Quedlinburg. It was created as early as the 14th and 15th centuries, according to other information parts go back to the beginning of the 13th century. The building consists of two parts. Number 8, located to the west, is partly made of massive construction from double-shell sandstone masonry, which may be traced back to an old self-fortification. In the interior of the first floor there is an ogival wall with two Gothic window and door openings. The sandstone walls are up to one meter thick and 6.5 meters high. The walls form a U-shape, a fourth wall is missing. Recesses for beam bars could be found, as they are otherwise known from fortress construction.

A large vaulted cellar extends below both parts of the building.

The simple, street-side, classicist half-timbered facade in front of it dates from the 19th century and is designed as a post construction. It occupies the first and second floors of number 8 and the entire number 9. The preserved medieval smoke vent is remarkable . The year 1410 was determined dendrochronologically . Houses number 8 and 9 were built together. A separation took place around the year 1600.

After a long period of vacancy, around 10 to 25 years, the entire building was in a ruinous condition at the beginning of the 21st century.

The renovation of number 8 took place in 2008/2009. The result was a living space of 120 m².

In the years 2008 to 2010, house number 9 was renovated. This created a unit of old and new components. In 2010, the architecture firm qbatur received an award for the Saxony-Anhalt Architecture Prize for its renovation . The building half number 9 now has a living space of around 140 m². The street-side facade had to be largely rebuilt due to the structural damage, using historical building materials. It was given a monochrome color scheme in the classicism style. The detailed, differentiated box windows were made from raw oak.

The front door of number 9 is made as a heavy door from oak planks, behind which a four meter high living hall opens. It is adjoined by an open gallery with a kitchen and dining area. The soot-blackened ceiling beams with only roughly hewn surfaces, which date from the Middle Ages, are remarkable. They are connected to the studs of the courtyard facade by means of struts. These stands were also destroyed. Before the renovation, the statics were only secured by a makeshift construction. The stud frame was rebuilt on the basis of the structural historical findings. The compartments of the restored courtyard facade were glazed, deviating from the historical appearance.

A plank cladding found in a false ceiling of the house turned out to be older than the house construction itself and was originally only reused. It was installed in a steel frame as a plank room .

The bedrooms, to which narrow stairs lead, were arranged on the upper and attic floors. In the house there are lamps designed by the Quedlinburg paper artist Katrin Ruhnau .
