The Hodoș-Bodrog Monastery

The bodrog monastery ( Romanian Mănăstirea Hodos-Bodrog ) is a medieval Romanian Orthodox monastery on the left Maroschufer , close to the Natural Park Maros floodplain , in Arad county , in the historical region Banat within the boundaries of the municipality Zădăreni . The Hodoș-Bodrog Monastery was first mentioned in 1177 and is one of the oldest monasteries in Romania .

History of the monastery

The Hodoș – Bodrog monastery is located on the lower reaches of the Marosch, 12 kilometers west of the city of Arad . Until 1839 the monastery was on the right bank of the Marosch and belonged to the village of Bodrogu Vechi and the municipality of Pecica . Since the monastery was threatened by the floods of the Marosch, the banks of which stretched to the walls of the monastery, the intervention of Abbot Grigore Chirilovici and the help of the territorial authorities from Arad diverted the Marosch northwest of the monastery in 1839 .

According to legend, the foundation of the monastery goes back to an aurochs , who is said to have found a wonderful icon of Our Lady with the child here. The discovery of this icon is said to have prompted the construction of the monastery.

The first written mention of the monastery dates from the year 1177. Other documents from the years 1213, 1233, 1278, 1293 mention a monastery Hodoș. In 1446 a Bodrog monastery appears. The double name Hodoș-Bodrog has been used since 1784. The monastery is now a place of pilgrimage to the Assumption of the Romanian population in Banat.

In recent years, restorations have been carried out on the entire monastery complex, a new bell tower and a new entrance gate have been built. The east-facing buildings were built in the second half of the 18th century, while the west-facing chapel and monks' cells were built between 1904 and 1907. The monastery was closed in 1949, re-established in 1975 and restored between 1979 and 1985. After 1990 a church , monks cells , a refectory , a monastery hostel, a museum with a rich collection of images of saints , old books and cult objects were built.

There are currently 25 monks living in the monastery.

description

The monastery complex includes an official building, an abbot's apartment, the monks' cells, several places of prayer and the church. The fossilized head of the aurochs and the wonderful icon are still kept inside the church.

The current monastery church dates from 1370 and is built in the Byzantine Trikonchos style with three apses opposite the entrance .

Inside the church is painted with a fresco . The fresco painting by the painter Nicodim Diaconul dates from 1658. The restoration of the paintings was carried out between 1938 and 1940 by the painters At. Damian and C. Cenan and carried out between 2009-2010 by the restorers Adriana Scărlătescu and Marius Oprea . The iconostasis was created by the Banat sculptor Busuioc . The outside of the church is plastered on three sides, the north side is decorated with external niches , some with frescoes by the painter E. Profeta in 1968.

During the Turkish rule from 1552 to 1690, the monastery served the archpriests as a residence. In 1651 the Metropolitan Sofronie from Russia was a guest here. In the 19th and 20th centuries the church served as the burial place of the Arad bishops.

In the monastery museum there is a medieval library with Slavic church manuscripts from the 16th century and old Romanian books. The “Indreptarea Legii” law book, which was printed in Govora in 1652 at the instigation of Matei Basarab , is a gem . Here Sevastian Tabacovici wrote one of the first Romanian plays in 1835, "Jertfa lui Avram" ( German for  Abraham's sacrifice or sacrifice of Isaac ).
