Rorup ( Low German Ruorp ) is a village in the western Münsterland and part of the city of Dülmen .

history

Rorup was first mentioned in 1050 under the name “Rodopo” in the register of incomes of the Reichsabtei Werden . Craftsmen and shopkeepers settled in the vicinity of a small moated castle , which belonged to the Lords of Rorup in the Middle Ages, and thus formed the core.

The Lords of Rorup have been mentioned in a document since the 13th century and had the trademark court and patronage over the church and the rectory. Rorup's mother church is today's Catholic parish church of St. Fabian and Sebastian zu Darup . In 1380 the parish Rorup was formed from parts of the extensive parish .

In 1361 Hinric von Rodope sold his buildings and lands to the Berend von Merfeld . Hermann von Merfeld then donated the family seat to the church in 1387. The Lords of Merfeld had a moated castle - the Rorup house - built outside the village.

The von Kükelsheim family followed the Merfelder in the 16th century. The property fell to the Amelunxen family in 1809 when there were no more male descendants. In 1838 August von Amelunxen sold the Rorup house to the Duke of Croÿ.

The village of Rorup belonged to the Horstmar office until 1803 - the abolition of the Principality of Münster - which belonged to France during the Napoleonic Wars . When the Prince Bishopric of Münster was incorporated into the Kingdom of Prussia , the municipality of Rorup was assigned to the Coesfeld district in 1816.

Due to the administrative reform of Freiherrn vom und zum Stein in 1816, the municipalities of Lette , Limbergen , Darup and Rorup were merged into the mayor's office of Rorup.

During the 19th century, between 305 and 471 people lived in Rorup. After the Second World War , the population rose to 670 due to refugees and displaced persons.

On January 1, 1975, Rorup lost its independence and - together with the neighboring Darup farmers Hanrorup and Holsterbrink - was incorporated into the city of Dülmen as part of the municipal reorganization.
