The Palazuelos Monastery ( Santa María de Palatiolis ) is a former Cistercian abbey in the municipality of Corcos del Valle in the province of Valladolid in Castile-León in Spain , around 12 km northeast of Valladolid and north of the Río Pisuerga .
location
Although this is located near the Río Pisuerga monastery in the municipality of Corcos del Valle, it is easier to reach from the neighboring town of Cabezón de Pisuerga ; it lies at a height of a good 700 m above sea level. d. M.
history
As a thank you for his services in the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa (1212), which was victorious for the Christians , Alfonso Téllez de Meneses received the Palazuelos estate from the Castilian King Alfonso VIII as a gift on July 28, 1213 . A few days later, he and his wife donated the gifted property to the Cistercian monastery Valbuena with the stipulation that he and his family should find their final resting place in the church that was still to be built. In 1226 an altar consecration took place, from which the completion of the choir part can be inferred; the remaining components were completed in 1254. In the following period, the abbey developed into the main monastery of the Cistercian order in the Kingdom of Castile ; several princes and kings stayed here.
As part of the abolition of the monastery ( desamortización ) under the government of Juan Álvarez Mendizábal , the monastery was dissolved in 1835. In the following period the monastery buildings disappeared with the exception of the church, which became the parish church. A partial renovation has recently taken place.
architecture
The basilically laid out and overall, despite its late construction period, rather Romanesque -looking four-bay church ends in a polygonal main apse and two semicircular side apses; all three apses have arched windows with two archivolts resting on pillars with plant capitals. All three apses as well as some yokes of the nave have Gothic ribbed vaults , whereas the transept shows only simple barrel vaults . A two-door sacristy was added to the main apse in the 16th century . From the fourth yoke in the south of the church, a door formerly led to the cloister and the other monastery buildings ( chapter house , dormitory , refectory, etc.)
Furnishing
All the Cistercian monasteries were rather sparsely equipped. Some of the cenotaphs of the Tellez family are still in the Capilla de Santa Inés ; however, the most beautiful were moved to the Diocesan and Cathedral Museum (Valladolid) in 1964 .
