The monastery Sparneck is a former convent of the Carmelites in Sparneck in Bavaria in the diocese of Bamberg .

history

The monastery in Sparneck was founded by Friedrich von Sparneck and was consecrated to St. Aegidius , one of the fourteen helpers in need . According to legend, Friedrich is said to have vowed during the Bavarian War that he would found a monastery if his possessions were protected from damage. They remained unharmed and Friedrich kept his promise. The activities of Johannes Soreth may also have contributed to the foundation. Shortly before completion in 1477, the founder died on October 10th and was buried in a crypt below the sanctuary of today's church. The crypt was rediscovered after the great fire of 1845 and the grave slab was placed in the church tower . The monastery was completed by Friedrich's son Christoph and inhabited by Carmelites . By 1534 15 priors are known by name.

After the Reformation , the monastery quickly fell into disrepair, was sold in 1550 and later demolished. The former monastery church forms the choir of the Sparneck parish church of St. Veit . On the Wandereisen woodcut you can see a roof turret on it , which is a sign of the modesty of the begging order. The church became Protestant in 1562, relatively late for the surrounding principality of Bayreuth , and got a new nave and a stone tower in 1695 .
