The Klusbach is the right 5.3 km long source stream of the Freibach in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen .

Surname

Klus , from the Latin clusa = enclosed space, is a name for a transverse valley of a river or stream with steep, rocky side walls.

The Klusbach rises at an altitude of about 879  m above sea level. M. im Naien in the area of ​​the municipality of Heiden in a forest south of the Wolfhalden hamlet of Altenstein, directly on the boundary between Heiden and Wolfhalden. It first flows in a north-easterly direction through forest, then crosses the border to Wolfhalden and after about six hundred meters is fed by the Najenbach on its right side . Shortly afterwards, the Ochsenbach also flows to it from the right . The Klusbach now leaves the forest and enters the open corridor. There it changes its direction to the north and moves through fields and meadows east of the hamlet of Schönenbühl . North of the hero meadow strengthens him on his right side of the hero Bach and east of Funkenbühl the Grenzbach . The stream then flows again through a wooded area at Klus . A little creek down he takes on his left side first to Katzenbach and immediately after the Tannenbach and in Gaiswies flows to him from the right Augstibach and then left the Brugg Tobelbach to. It now runs north-west and flows about two hundred meters east along the village of Wolfhalden. It now crosses under Hauptstrasse 463 and is immediately fed from the left by the Koltobelbach . There he once ran the Bruggmühle . To the north of the Plätzle , the brook forms the border between Wolfhalden and Lutzenberg . At the hamlet of Tobelmühle, the Klusbach crosses the canton border and changes to Thal in the canton of St. Gallen . There it flows to the left of the Haslibach and shortly afterwards it is strengthened from the right by the Haufenbach . In Thal it is also known as Dorfbach Thal . Finally it flows into the Gstaldenbach , which from here on is called Freibach .

Character and water quality

The Klusbach is a near-natural wild forest stream. Almost the entire upper course is in good eco-morphological condition. In 2003 the Klusbach was classified as critically to very heavily polluted due to heterotrophic vegetation and foam, and in a study of the Appenzell rivers in 2008, however, it received a good grade in the overall biological evaluation. In the lower reaches, however, excessive phosphorus concentrations were detected.

Worth mentioning is the geotope "Klusbach" glacier mills , a series of partially buried whirlpool holes and smaller glacier mills in the rocky bed of the Klusbach .

fauna

The water of the Klusbach is an ideal habitat for the brown trout . Occasional rainbow trout can also be spotted.
