History of origin

On July 29, 2007, Michael Roth announced the first details of the upcoming album in the band's official forum . After exploring the texts that had been planned for the bone cult so far , he had come to the decision to discard some of them completely because they did not seem good enough to him. Likewise, the first five working titles with the names Be meat and meat be dead , The dear ax , 19 nails for Sophie , Stahlschwarzschwanger , Bone cult , appear! , Sweet meat night prayer and driven hunt announced, with the note that there will be more to come. The latter two titles were originally intended for the Eisblut album Scar World , but Roth thought they were better off on Bone Cult. The text to Be Meat and Meat Be Dead was also published in the forum at the same time.

The following was said about the style in advance:

“The songwriting has also started, two of the tracks have been composed. I don't have to lean too far out of the window to see: K [nochen] k [ult] will definitely not be a second B [lut] B [ahnen] or whatever album we've done so far. "

- Michael Roth : about bone cult

On June 26, 2008, Roth finally announced that most of the work was already finished and that it would probably appear in autumn:

“The pure instrumental recordings and also the vocals have been completed since today, only the bass will be played by the boy on Monday. The album itself will certainly be my favorite work from my own work - so far, of course, you have to keep options open for future goods. [I'm] curious to see how it will be received by the fans, if it is in stores from the end of September. We worked at the current limit and I like the result very much [...] I'll be in the studio for the final mix next week [...] and I'm looking forward to the end result as if this were my first record. "

- Michael Roth :

Before the album was released, the song Stahlschwarzschwanger was released in full via the band's official Myspace presence. Massacre Records put a short sample of each song online, which resulted in the first reviews even before the album went on sale on Amazon.de , but Roth commented negatively, as it was questionable in his opinion to give a review for an album that you have only heard extracts:

"Since the writer of the 'review' presented little constructive information apart from a faulty grammar & didn't even hear the entire work in advance, but rated it on the basis of a few 1-minute audio samples, the question arises why AMAZON reviews of a product weeks BEFORE its actual release at all ... Very useful. Anyway: I like our new CD. It's tough, nasty, unfriendly, boldly produced, has some "nice" stories to offer - so if you are self-respecting, you should buy it. You feel better with BONE CULT in the house, believe me ... "

content

Compared to its predecessor, Blutbahnen , the lyrics of the album have become more morbid again, with the majority of the songs being ballads again. In 19 nails for Sophie it is described how the protagonist learns after years that his girlfriend cheated on him and never loved him, whereupon he drives these 19 nails - one for every lover - into the body. Before that, he had also visited and murdered all of her lovers.

The last house at the end of the one-way street is the theme of snuff films . The protagonists lure young people into their house, where they kill them in the most cruel way “for art” in front of the camera. The cut film is then shown to an audience, but a woman recognizes her daughter there, who disappeared without a trace, whereupon the filmmakers are arrested.

Black gigolo is about a gigolo who has affairs with older single women and who - after they have established him as heir in their will - poisoned them in order to enrich themselves.

In Das liebe Beil, however, it is described how the protagonist becomes aware of the hatchet as a weapon and “falls in love” with this tool, with which he from then on performs all his deeds. Nor can he imagine what his life must have been like before he knew the hatchet.

style

Singer Roth already stated in advance that the "record [...] turned out to be very complex [and] some songs or parts [...] in their degree of hardness were quite suitable for E [is] B [lut]".

While the predecessor Blutbahnen began with the song Eine kleine Schlachtmusik rather untypical for freezing rain, the first song Stahlschwarzschwanger begins this time with synthetic sounds that introduce the song. The violin , which had played a crucial role in Eisregen's music since the cancer colony , is no longer used. Roth's vocals are now tending towards the older albums with the growls. There are again clear singing passages that are more diverse than with blood vessels, but are used less often in comparison. Purely clearly sung songs are no longer available, only with Schwarzer Gigolo is sung purely clear except for the final lines.

Presentation

The cover artwork is again a painting specially made for the album, as was the case with Decay and Wounding Water . The motif, which shows the lower part of a naked female body sitting on a skeleton, was designed by Berg Morbach, a former member of Eisregen, who also did the artwork for Wundwasser . The template for this is provided by a cover from the Asian zoophilia label Genki Genki. The trees that were painted in the background also correspond in terms of painting technology to those that were seen on the Wundwasser cover.

As with Wundwasser , no texts were enclosed, but a small poster. In addition, a fake warning was enclosed, which jokingly referred to this fact as a protective measure:

“Caution: The lyrics on this CD are purely fictional. They contain, among other things, artistic depictions of violence belonging to the horror genre. Mentally unstable adolescents & adults who fear a negative impact of these texts on their common good, we strongly advise against consuming the CD! In order to protect these people, the texts are not printed. "

In addition to the production data, the booklet therefore only contains a double-sided picture of the band, which was made in a forest.

Since the font designed by Yantit has only been used for the logo since Wundwasser , the title list of the album has now been put back into it. Interestingly, a “ ” (as a capital letter) has now also been used there for the first time .

Others

The limited digipak version of the album contains a new setting of the song Blut ist Leben , which was included on the demo Das Ende des Weges , as a bonus song . Michael Roth announced on July 1, 2008 in the forum that there would be a bonus title and promised whoever guessed the title first one of the limited digipak versions including a personal dedication. In addition to the digipak version, there is a limited bone cult box which, in addition to the album, contains a t-shirt and an autograph card.
