Rust is the ninth studio album of the Thuringian dark metal - band freezing rain . It was released in December 2011 on the Massacre Records label . Another CD entitled Todestage was announced in the booklet accompanying the album .

The album title consists of two compound words with the same first letter: rust and the color red . Apart from the album Zerfall , all Eisregen releases show this alliteration .

Rostrot was announced in the course of the release of the previous album Schlangensonne . In the booklet accompanying the album, the complete text of the song Madenreich is printed, which is atypical for freezing rain. The text is flanked by an illustration of a cemetery. Further illustrations in the booklet show the band members. The album in September 2011 was recorded in Mellrichstadt in Klangschmiede Studio E .

Style and content

Musically and stylistically, the album is characterized by the high use of guitars typical of Eisregen. In addition to Roth's voice, a piano , light strings and a snare can be heard in the opener Erlösung . A keyboard is used for melodic support , which gives the piece Madenreich , for example, a special flair. In terms of vocal technique, the work offers both songs with predominantly clear vocal parts as well as songs, for example Jackal Ode to the Cluster Bomb and Blood Father , which, in addition to the singing, are musically reminiscent of older works. Thematically, for example, in Moving Targets the album deals with a failed bank robbery, in Kathi the cake pig with theological - humorous trains of thought.

All of the lyrics on the album were penned by Roth. Markus Stock plays the lead guitar on Wechselbalg as a guest musician. All songs were recorded in the Klangkreis Thuringia.

In contrast to various songs from the previous albums, it is not the Second World War that is thematized , but rather the Vietnam War in the Jackal ode to the cluster bomb . The military-warlike act in Blutvater cannot be clearly assigned to any historical context. In addition to borrowing from the horror genre typical of ice rain, the album is also characterized by black humor combined with a certain potential for provocation: This is expressed, for example, in the title Kathi the cake pig , in which the following questions are raised: Who is coming in the door? Is that really still a person or is it a giant pig? In addition, the thesis is put forward in this song that God hates fat people. With the eponymous person Kathi , Eisregen refers to the East German baking mix manufacturer Kathi Rainer Thiele from Magdeburg .

reception

Rust red was received cautiously by the press. Florian Dammasch from metal.de described the album as the usual upper average and awarded 7 out of 10 points. Stefan Frühauf from dark-festivals.de also gave 7 out of 10 points and found that Rostrot doesn’t really stand out among the other Eisregen albums, either up or down . Moritz Grütz made an ambiguous conclusion on metal1.info and awarded 6.5 out of 10 points. Jan-Phillip Rensmann from undergrounded.de also ranked the album in the average of freezing rain releases and rated it with 8 out of 10 points.

Rostrot reached 72nd place in the German charts. This was occupied for a week.
