Kobi Arad (born October 2, 1981 in Haifa , Israel ) is an Israeli - American pianist and music composer of fusion music . He grew up in Haifa, studied music at Tel Aviv University and currently lives in New York . In his music he combines different styles, including third stream , jazz , R&B , hip-hop and electronic music , with improvisation being the focus of much of his work. His music has been featured in several publications including Ynet , Jazz Times and All About Jazz . Arad has worked with other musicians, such as B. Stevie Wonder and Cindy Blackman , worked together. In New York, his current residence, he works as a composer, arranger and also a performing artist.

Career

Arad initially worked as a pianist with Lehakat HaNakhal ; during his military service he worked as arranger and leader of the orchestras of the Israeli army. In 2003 he presented his debut album. In 2007 he began to be active in the New York music scene. In 2009 he performed at local New York cultural events such as: B. at Chabad House in New York. In 2010 Arad released his album Ancient Novice , which was positively rated by the Jazz Times . On these recordings, Arad is accompanied by five strings from the Boston Symphony Orchestra .

His self-published album Skeches of Imaginary Landscapes (without label, 2011) received positive reviews from All About Jazz . The musician's “outstanding technical skills” were highlighted. Arad was accompanied by Ray McNaught on drums and Tucker Yaro on bass .

In the spring of 2012 Arad presented his project called Inner Hymns together with a trio in New York; he was accompanied by Ramon De-bruyn on bass and Ray McNaught on drums . Another article about the concert appeared in the Israeli Ynet on January 20, 2012 .

After moving to Art Kibbutz on Governors Island in 2013 , Arad began working with the Pakistani sitar player Ikhlaq Hussein Khan. In August 2014 he was part of the Art Kibbutz's Jewish Waltz with Planet Earth art exhibition.

In June 2015 he worked with Robert Margouleff on The Experience Project . On his album Superflow , released in 2015, he was also supported by Roy Ayers on vibraphone and Jonathan Levy on bass. In August 2015, Arad performed an experimental jazz composition at the Shmita Art Fest at Art Kibbutz. In January 2016 he performed together with the jazz singer Daphna Levi in ​​Tel Aviv.

Recently he has performed his work with the Kobi Arad Band and has performed at events at Blue Note , Jazz at Lincoln Center , Knitting Factory , Tonic , and the Cutting Room . Arad has worked with musicians including Stevie Wonder , Lenny Kravitz , and Cindy Blackman . He has also arranged pieces of music for publication by companies such as Hal Leonard .
