The Kochelsee miracle (also known as the Anastasia miracle ) is the name given to a foehn that suddenly occurred and saved Benediktbeuern monastery from destruction by Tyrolean and Austrian soldiers on January 28, 1704 .

history

prehistory

In the War of the Spanish Succession , the Bavarian Elector Max Emanuel conquered North Tyrol in 1703 . Tyrolean fighters took up the resistance. There were attacks and looting in the entire Bavarian Alpine foothills . The Austrian military and Tyrolean riflemen camped in the Scharnitz border fortress also demanded a tribute from the abbot of the Benediktbeuern monastery , Eliland Öttl . But thanks to local riflemen, the monastery was well armed against attacks from all directions - but not from the south. There it was protected by the Loisach , the Kochelsee and above all the Loisach-Kochelsee moors . As a precaution, the monks had dismantled the Loisach Bridge near Brunnenbach and also had large trees felled on Kesselberg to make the road impassable.

Attack over the frozen moor

The war winter of 1703/04 was extremely cold. Kochelsee, Loisach and the moors froze so tight that the attackers saw a new opportunity: the attack over the frozen moors and thus on the less well-protected south side of the monastery. Around 2000 soldiers marched on January 28, 1704 on foot and on horseback from Ohlstadt . Refugees, hurrying ahead of the attackers and seeking protection in the monastery, told the abbot on the day before the planned attack of the impending danger. Resistance would require great sacrifices and had no prospect of success.

Hair dryer break-in

Since the next day, January 29, 1704, the feast day of the local St. Anastasia - Brotherhood was the monks asked for the intercession of the saints whose relics have long been revered in the monastery. On the afternoon of January 28, the day of the attack, a strong hair dryer set in . The frozen moor softened within three hours, the ice cover of the Kochelsee became brittle. The attackers' wagons broke into the lake and sank, others got stuck in the muddy bog.

The catastrophe also affected the mood: Quite a few soldiers believed heavenly forces were at play, they refused to fight any more. The chaos, which threatened to end in mutiny , finally caused the army commanders to call off the attack.

In memory of this event, Abbot Eliland Öttl's successor, Leonhard Hohenauer, had the Anastasia Chapel, built on the monastery grounds in 1606, demolished and replaced by a new baroque building from 1751 to 1753 .
