Exclusion from school after leaving church considered

The high school received national attention in April 2010, when a 17-year-old was attempted to be expelled from the church after leaving the church. The headmaster Manfred Schöpplein applied to the school administration to expel the tenth grader from school because she had violated the school contract by leaving the Catholic Church. The school also accepts non-denominational students because it is the only grammar school in the small town in Upper Swabia. Regarding the case of the 17-year-olds, however, the diocese of Augsburg stated that it made a difference whether one did not belong from the start or whether one consciously turned away. Through the reporting it became known that the church high school received grants in the amount of 940,000 euros from the Neu-Ulm district as well as grants from the Bavarian Ministry of Culture in an undisclosed amount. The district administrator of the district of Neu-Ulm, Erich Josef Geßner (CSU), and the local member of the Bundestag of the Greens, Ekin Deligöz , called on the school authorities in public statements to refrain from being expelled from school.

On May 5, 2010, the school authorities announced that the pupil could stay at the college because “the relationship of trust was disturbed but not broken” and the relationship with the school could be continued in a “fruitful way” despite leaving.
