geology
The low mountain range around the Kollmitzberg is characterized by the breakthrough valley of the Danube ( Strudengau ) through the Bohemian Massif , which separates the so-called Neustadtler Platte from the plateaus north of the Danube. In areas of geological faults, side valleys such as the Stillensteinklamm or the Tiefenbach form canyon-like valley cuts. South of the Kollmitzberg, the Bohemian Massif dips below the molasse zone of the foothills of the Alps and the Northern Alps, which is much younger in geological terms. Geologically, the Kollmitzberg consists mainly of granites , which are covered with up to 30 meters thick flins as a weathered layer of the granite. In the geological time of the Neogene , 22 - 5 million years ago, the Kollmitzberg was probably a kind of coastal rock on the northern edge of the Molasse Sea .
history
It is historically documented that it was first mentioned in the 9th century as Collomezza and in 1135 as Chalmunze . The proximity to the word Kalamantia from the Celto-Roman word for "high, protected place" make an early settlement of the hilltop likely. The earlier derivation of the name from Slavic " Kulm " (mountain) can therefore be ruled out.
The Kollmitzberg was a place of refuge with a hill fort , which is also indicated by the field name "In der Burg". From the mountain you have an excellent all-round view, which also made it the place of a chalk fire - fire could warn surrounding places of enemies. On the opposite side of the Danube, the Kosenburg monitored the shipping traffic at the entrance to the Strudengau .
While the ships and rafts had to conquer the dangerous Danube vortex in the Middle Ages , the Strudengau was mostly bypassed by land via Kollmitzberg and Neustadtl an der Donau .
Around 1830 a "flying bridge" was built between Upper Austria and Tiefenbach. The approximately 700 meter long rope was mostly anchored in the water with a heavy stone basket. Around 1890 a roller ferry was built with a rope stretched high above the water from mountain to mountain. Only with the opening of the Danube bridge built between 1965 and 1967 was a fast traffic connection established over the Danube to Grein.

The church at the back could originally have been a Roman watchtower and also evidence of the early settlement of the hilltop. The church, consecrated to Saint Ottilia , is mentioned for the first time around 1260, but has been heavily changed through several renovations. The Kirtag goes back to the 13th century.
Nearby is the Hexenstein .
