Konrad II (Welfen)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Konrad II was the eldest son of Count Konrad I of Auxerre , who had been the adviser to his brothers-in-law, Emperor Ludwig the Pious († 840) and King Ludwig the German in 859, before he - together with his sons Konrad II and Hugo Abbas - joined his biological nephew Karl the Kahlen , and thereby lost all titles and counties in Eastern Franconia .

Since Konrad I had been compensated with the county of Auxerre , Konrad II inherited this title when his father probably died in 863. However, he seems to have fallen out of favor soon afterwards, as Charles the Bald withdrew the county from him and he moved to the court of his nephew Lothar II . Lothar II and his brother Ludwig II entrusted him with the task of subjugating the rebellious Transjurania , the land between the Jura and the Alps , where neither Lothar II nor Ludwig II ruled (Lothar had ceded the area to Ludwig in 859), but the Bosonide Hugbert , Lothar's brother-in-law.

Conrad II solved the given task by defeating Hugbert near Orbe in Vaud in 864 and two years later, in 866, as the margrave himself, took over the rule in Transjurania.

The year of Konrad's death is unknown. All that is known is that his son Rudolf I was referred to as Margrave of Transjurania as early as 872.

Konrad and his wife Waldrada had (at least) two children:

At the same time, a Margrave Conrad II of Burgundy appears in the documents, whose daughter Adelgunde is attested in 890/902, and who testifies to the progenitor of the Ezzonen , Erenfried I, 866/904, 877 Graf im Bliesgau , 895 Graf von Charmois , married. The analogy to the Guelph Konrad II is obvious, but the identity has not been proven.
