Conrad III. (Silesia)

Conrad III. of Silesia (also Konrad II of Glogau ; Konrad "Köberlein" ; Polish: Konrad II Garbaty ; * between 1260 and 1265; † October 11, 1304 ) was Duke of Silesia and 1274-1304 Duke of Sagan . As Provost of Wroclaw , he was elected Patriarch of Aquileia .

Life

Konrad came from the line of the Silesian Piasts . He is the second-born son of Duke Konrad II of Glogau . His siblings reached adulthood:

Konrad is said to have been mentioned for the first time in 1267 on the occasion of the canonization of his great-grandmother Hedwig von Andechs . After the death of his father Konrad II († 1273/74), the founder of the Duchy of Glogau , its territory was divided. The eldest son Heinrich continued the Glogau ducal line, while the second-born Konrad was now registered as the "Duke of Sagan". He was appointed to the clergy by his parents. After studying in Bologna , he became provost of the cathedral of Breslau in 1281 , where he was supported by Bishop Thomas II . After his death in 1292 a part of the cathedral capitular elected Konrad "Köberlein" to be his successor. Because of an unusual election procedure, however, he could not stand up against Johann III, who was also running . Romka prevail. Since Konrad's older brother Heinrich had hopes to get to his sub-area after the election of Konrad as Bishop of Breslau, he opened hostilities against the elected Johann Romka, as a result of which he ( Heinrich ) was banned from Romka.

In 1299 Conrad was elected Patriarch of Aquileia , but Pope Boniface VIII refused the consent required for this. Shortly before his death on September 7, 1304, Konrad bequeathed the Sagan area to his brother Heinrich in a will. His body was buried in the Cistercian monastery of Leubus .
