Konrad Schulz

Konrad Schulz (born October 2, 1940 in Elbing ; † June 29, 2001 in Hamburg ) was a German painter, graphic artist, sculptor and object artist.

biography

Schulz studied sculpture at the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg under Gustav Seitz from 1961 to 1966 , then in 1966/67 with a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service at the Royal College of Art in London. In 1968 he was a founding member of the CO-OP artist cooperative Hamburg . From 1968 to 1973 Konrad Schulz was a lecturer at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts. In 1970 he was one of the co-founders of the “Tandem” project group. From 1972 he worked as a freelance artist in Hamburg. In 1985 Schulz received the "Altona Art Prize".

One focus of his complete works were sculptural works by the end of the 1970s. He created large objects and sculptures from various materials. He achieved international fame in the 1970s with his “tire objects” (“Geländecouch”), which he later took up and cited thematically, for example in the “Bicycle objects” from the 1990s. From 1980 painting gained importance in his work. It emerged paintings , gouaches , collages , charcoal and chalk drawings, silkscreens and woodcuts . His painting always remained attached to the representational, but was characterized by a spontaneous and expressive brushstroke . All of his works, sculptural as well as painterly, have a humorous conception and effect.

He published two books with drawings: "Bärenwinter", 1977, and "Berufsköpfe", 1978. Commissions: Changeable and playable object sculptures for a Hamburg secondary school. Water play hill for a day care center in Hamburg. 1970 Hamburg stylus art . Public collections: Hamburg cultural authority.
