Life

Gorbatov was born in Samara Governorate . From 1896 to 1903 Gorbatov lived in Riga and studied civil engineering there. In 1904 he moved to Saint Petersburg , studied at the Central Institute for Technical Drawing Baron Stieglitz and architecture at the Russian Academy of Art , later painting there . His teacher there was the landscape painter Nikolai Dubowskoi (1859-1918). He received a scholarship and was able to continue his studies in Rome and Capri in 1912 . After his return he showed his work at exhibitions of the Peredwischniki artist group . He lived in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

In 1922, as a result of the Russian Revolution , he decided to emigrate and initially settled in Capri. In 1926 he went to Berlin . There he joined a circle of Russian emigrants from an intellectual milieu, including the painters Vadim Falileyev , Ivan Myasoyedov and Leonid Pasternak . During his time in Berlin he traveled a lot. Among other things, he visited Palestine and Syria in 1934 and 1935 , stayed often in Italy, especially in Capri and Venice, and traveled to Finland and London .

He was able to establish himself as a well-known artist, the Abels Gallery in Cologne held an exhibition of his works in May 1931. That changed dramatically after the Nazis came to power in 1933. His art was no longer in demand and the family became impoverished. After the outbreak of World War II, he was no longer allowed to leave the country as a Soviet citizen. He died shortly after Berlin was conquered by the Soviets on May 12, 1945. Shortly afterwards, on June 17, 1945, his wife committed suicide.
