Kornél Ábrányi in Hungarian Ábrányi Kornél [ aːbraːɲi Kornel ] (* 15. October 1822 in Szentgyörgyábrány ; † 20th December 1903 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian pianist (pupil of Franz Liszt and Liszt Ferencz), writer , music theorist and composer and is considered as one of the great Hungarian musicians.

Life

Ábrányi was born in the village of Szentgyörgyábrány in the Hajdúhadház small area , in today's Szabolcs County , as the son of the aristocratic landowner Alajos Ábrányi . Music played an important role in this family and the family maintained contacts with the Hungarian composers János Lavotta and János Bihari, among others . These shaped the musical interest of the young Kornél in the first years of life.

In 1834 he met Ferenc Erkel while studying music in Oradea (German: Großwardein) . He published his first record in 1841 and made his debut as a pianist in Oradea the following year .

After continuing his studies abroad from 1843 onwards, he met Franz Liszt in Munich , who was on his way through Europe. From this meeting a lasting friendship developed between the two Hungarian composers. After stays in Paris, where he learned from Frédéric Chopin , London and Vienna , he finally returned to Hungary in 1847 and was a civil servant from 1848 to 1849, while at the same time participating as a volunteer in the Hungarian War of Liberation . He then lived in Budapest , where he founded the first Hungarian musical magazine Zenészeti Lapok in 1860 , of which he remained editor-in-chief until 1876.

From 1875 he played a decisive role in the development of the Budapest Music Academy , which was founded by his friend Ferencz Liszt. There he worked until 1888 as a teacher of music composition, music theory, music history and the aesthetics of music lessons. In 1877 he published a musical school and textbook on music in Hungary, which was considered the largest literary publication on this subject at that time.

On October 28, 1876, he presented to the Hungarian public the opera Carmen, composed by Georges Bizet and premiered in Paris the year before, in the Budapest National Theater .

From 1882 he published the Bulletin Zenészeti ( Eng . Music boxes ) and published in this works by Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt, Richard Wagner , Hector Berlioz and other Hungarian contemporaries.

Ábrányi mainly wrote piano pieces , choral works and songs .
