Konstantínos "Kostis" Tsiklitíras ( Greek Κωνσταντίνος "Κωστής" Τσικλητήρας , born October 30, 1888 in Pylos ; † February 10, 1913 ) was a Greek athlete and Olympic champion .
Born in Pylos, Tsiklitiras is one of the best Greek athletes of all time. To this day he is the only Greek athlete who has won medals in two different Olympic Games . Due to his untimely death his career ended without him being able to exhaust his possibilities.
Early 20th century Tsiklitirias moved to Athens in order there is a study of the economics take. After he discovered his above-average sporting talent in Athens, he enrolled at the popular sports club Panathinaikos Athens . In addition to football and water polo , he mainly pursued athletics there . In 1908 and 1912 he took part in the long jump from standing and high jump from standing at the Olympic Games . While there were only two silver medals at the Games in London , Tsiklitiras was able to win the gold medal in the standing long jump and the bronze medal in the standing high jump in Stockholm four years later .
In addition to his four Olympic medals, Tsiklitiras also won 19 national championships. In 1913, one year after his triumph in Sweden , Tsiklitiras volunteered for the front line of the Balkan War and died there of meningitis at the age of 25 .
Honors
- In his honor, in addition to the national championships, athletics competitions bearing his name are held annually in Greece.
- An ATR-42 with the registration SX-BIM, owned by the Greek airline Olympic Airlines , bears the name of Tsiklitiras on the fuselage.
