The Kozí hřbety ( goat back ) is an elongated mountain ridge on the eastern Bohemian ridge of the Giant Mountains in the Czech Republic .

location

The chain of small and tiny peaks extends two kilometers northeast of the center of Špindlerův Mlýn (Spindleruv Mlyn) in an east-west direction. The highest point is reached at the Vyhlídka Krakonoš viewpoint ( Rübezahl view ) at 1422 m, which, however, is not classified as an independent peak according to the classification for main and secondary peaks.
In the middle part of the ridge there are two peaks, the lower western peak (1318 m, coordinates: 50 ° 44 ′ 5 ″  N , 15 ° 38 ′ 31 ″  E ) and the higher eastern peak Kozí hřbety V (1387 m, coordinates: 50 ° 44 ′ 2 ″  N , 15 ° 39 ′ 15 ″  E ). The 1321 m high Železný vrch ( Eisenberg ) forms the western end over Špindlerův Mlýn .

In the north it is bordered by the valley of the Bílé Labe (translated White Elbe , German white water ), in the south by the valley of Svatopetrský potok . The translation is "Sankt Petersbach", the German name is groundwater ; the valley itself is called Peters long reason , short Langer Grund and in Czech Dlouhý důl . The western slope slopes down into the Elbe Valley at Dívčí stráň ( Mädelgrund ) . In the east, the ridge merges gently into the meadow plan with the Luční hora ( high meadow mountain ), where the former refuge of the Rennerbaude was located.

geology

The goat's back can be seen as the foothills of the Hochwiesenberg and defines a considerable part of the eastern Bohemian Giant Mountains ridge with its very uniform elevation. Its height section is extremely narrow and the north and south slopes are impressive in height and steepness. This unusual appearance gave the ridge its name.

Hydrology

The slopes of the Goat Back are drained by many parallel streams. In the north they flow into the Bílé Labe, in the south into the Svatopetrský potok. Both bodies of water are the first and, in the early upper reaches, the most important tributaries of the Elbe - North Sea river system .

history

In the 16th century, copper and silver ores and other mineral resources began to be extracted; During the First World War , arsenic ores in particular were mined for the production of weapons. The mines have been closed since 1923. Evidence of mining activities can still be found, especially on the Langen Grund.

Tourism and nature protection

The summit region of the goat ridge was largely protected with the beginning of tourism because of the associated damage to nature; an old footpath that led over the ridge to Spindleruv Mlyn is permanently closed. There are only a few designated hiking trails that are marked as follows from the center of Spindleruv Mlyn:

The hiking trail with the green sign leads to Svatý Petr ( St. Peter ) and through the Lange Grund on the south side;
The blue marked Weber-Weg leads through the Weißwassergrund (valley of the White Elbe) to the north side of the ridge.

From the Weißwassergrund as well as from the Lange Grund leads past the meadow hut ( Luční bouda ), the only connection over the ridge to the other side.

The path with the red marking leads, also on the south side, over the Alte Buchar-Weg to the Rübezahl view.

From here the path can continue following the red markings in the direction of Hochwiesenberg, or down the valley via the green or blue marked paths.
