The Železný vrch (German Eisenberg ) is a mountain at the western end of the eastern Bohemian ridge of the Giant Mountains.

location

The Eisenberg is 2 km northeast of Spindleruv Mlyn ( Špindlerův Mlýn ) and forms the western end of the goat back ( Kozí hřbety ). Below the northern slope is the valley of the Bílé Labe ( White Elbe ), below the southern slope is the valley of Svatopetrský potok (also Dolský potok ; German large groundwater, groundwater or Klaussenwasser ), which is called Dlouhý důl ( Long Bottom ).

Hydrology

The slopes of the Eisenberg and Ziegenrückens are drained by many parallel streams. In the north they flow into the Bílé Labe, in the south into the Svatopetrský potok, both of which are tributaries of the Elbe .

Flora and fauna

The ridge is covered by mountain pines , between which small rocks protrude and, especially on the southern slopes, there are extensive seas of rocks that are broken by the crooked wood . The lower areas are covered by spruce forest, which is loosened up in places by clearings.

Due to the steepness of the terrain, it is a suitable habitat for a few larger animals and, as is often the case in the Giant Mountains, it is the birds that benefit. Bullfinch ( Pyrrhula pyrrhula ), Chaffinch ( Fringilla coelebs ), yellowhammer ( Emberiza citrinella ), Whinchat ( Saxicola rubetra ), Water Pipit ( Anthus spinoletta ) and Tree Pipit ( Anthus trivialis ), to name just a few.

Tourism and nature protection

- A forest path marked in yellow leads on the northeast slope from the White Elbe valley to the vicinity of the summit, which is in nature protection zone I of the Krkonošský národní park (KRNAP) and is not allowed to be entered. This also applies to the footpath that leads directly to the Rübezahl view ( Vyhlídka Krakonoš ). This highest elevation of the goat's back at a height of 1422 above sea level. M. offers a great, almost complete panorama of the central and western Giant Mountains and can be reached by a path from Svatý Petr.
