The Krätzbach (called Grezzbach in Künzell) is an approx. 5 km long stream that rises in the area of the municipality of Künzell and flows into the Fulda in the city of Fulda .
course
The Krätzbach rises north of the 'Unterm Born' path, south of the B 458 and east of the A7 . To the west of Grezzbachstrasse, the Grezzbach runs through Künzeller Park and the adjoining Grezzbachpark, where its course through the municipality of Künzell has been gradually reduced in a natural way since 2007.
At the Hotel Bachmühle it crosses under Berliner Strasse and Künzeller Strasse and then runs as Krätzbach in the area of the city of Fulda. If it initially runs below the central cemetery, it then crosses under the railway tracks in the Krätzbach tunnel, only to reappear south of Mehlerstrasse in the area of the Mehler company . At Edelzeller Strasse 44 there was the deserted Krätzmühle, first mentioned in 956 . The Krätzbach flows into the Fulda at the Hornungsmühle, today the headquarters of the KGM Kugelfabrik.
History
Foundation of Künzell
The community of Künzell emerged from a settlement in the basin of the upper reaches of the Grezzbach, which was named Chindecella or Kindecella after its founder, the monk Chindolf.
Air raid on Fulda
The approximately 400 m long, canalized creek underpass in Fulda under the railroad tracks and the marshalling yard between Heidelsteinstrasse and Mehlerstrasse was temporarily expanded into an aerial warfare tunnel at the end of the Second World War , the so-called Krätzbach bunker . On December 27, 1944, more than 700 people, including 451 Mehler employees, were killed here in an American air raid when both tunnel entrances were buried. The purpose of the attack was to destroy the still intact train station as a traffic junction and supply route for the Ardennes offensive . A memorial stone inaugurated in 1981 on Mehlerstrasse commemorates the victims, as does a manhole cover in the sidewalk on Heidelsteinstrasse.
